Washington Wizards name Capital City Go-Go as G League affiliate

The Washington Wizards’ entry into the NBA G League has taken another step with the naming of their new affiliate.

Say hello to the Capital City Go-Go.

The name moves away from the magical theme of the Wizards, and the WNBA’s Washington Mystics, opting instead to focus more on the history and culture of the D.C. region.

“The Go-Go music scene has been ingrained in the fiber of our vibrant community for decades,” Wizards CEO Ted Leonsis said in a press release. “We are proud to help continue that legacy.”

Using the term ‘Capital City’ also plays on basketball’s history in Washington, going back to the NBA’s Capital City Bullets teams in the 1970s. The logo itself doesn’t stray too far from the Wizards, however. Atop the Conga featured on the emblem is a drum head with the Wizards’ primary basketball logo. The color scheme will also remain the same as the Wizards and Mystics.

Unlike the Wizards, the Go-Go will not play at Capital One Arena. Instead, parent company Monumental Sports & Entertainment will open a new stadium in southeast D.C. for both Capital City and Mystics games. The facility — slated to open in 2018 — will also be used for Wizards practices and to house the NBA team’s offices.
