Washington vs. Carolina Week 16 inactives: Gibson in, Smith out originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington

For the second consecutive week, Dwayne Haskins will be the starting quarterback for the Washington Football Team when they take on the Carolina Panthers in Week 16.

Haskins gets the start after Alex Smith was unable to suit up with a calf injury, one he suffered in Week 14 against the 49ers. Smith was a full participant in practice on Friday but was sore on Saturday, leaving Washington pessimistic that he would be able to return this week.

As Haskins makes his sixth start of the season, he'll be missing his top wide receiver. Terry McLaurin, Washington's first 1,000-yard receiver since 2016, is inactive for the first time this season with an ankle injury. McLaurin has been dealing with the injury since Week 11 but appeared to re-aggravate it last week against Seattle. The second-year pro didn't practice all week and was doubtful to play.

Washington did get some good news regarding the injury front, though, as rookie running back Antonio Gibson returns to the lineup for the first time since Week 13. Gibson had missed Washington's past two games with a turf toe injury, but practiced in limited fashion all week and is set to return.

On the defensive side of the ball, Washington gets a big boost as linebacker Cole Holcomb returns to the lineup after missing last week's game with a concussion. Linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis, who also missed Week 15 with injury, is inactive for a second straight week.

For Carolina, they'll be without multiple starters on both sides of the ball, including star running back Christian McCaffrey, left tackle Russell Okung and cornerback Troy Pride Jr. Brian Burns, Carolina's best pass rusher, is active after missing all week of practice with a knee injury.
