WASHINGTON STATE BASEBALL: Utes punch back in WSU's opening Pac-12 series

Mar. 10—PULLMAN — Washington State's dominant Pac-12 baseball opener Friday didn't carry over into a Saturday game against the hungry Utah Utes at Bailey-Brayton Field.

Utah won the second game of the three-game series 5-4 after the Cougars won the opener 7-1 the previous day.

The series concludes at 12:05 p.m. today back at Bailey-Brayton Field.

On Saturday, WSU (8-5, 1-1 Pac-12) built a 4-1 lead through the first four innings. Left fielder and leadoff-man Max Hartman was the primary conductor at the plate with two hits, three RBI and a run.

Hartman scored the game's first run on a Joey Kramer single in the first, added an RBI-double in the second and knocked in a run in the fourth with a single to right field.

But the Utes (10-4, 1-1)rallied despite a great start from WSU starting pitcher Connor Wilford (2-1). Wilford fanned eight batters in 7 2/3 innings, but he took the loss after Utah's Kai Roberts drove in Core Jackson for the go-ahead run in the eighth.

Wilford had retired the first 11 hitters of the game before Roberts hit a solo homer with two outs in the fourth inning for the team's first hit of the game.

The Utes also scored once in the sixth and twice in the seventh during their comeback. Roberts' two hits, two RBI and one run led Utah at the plate.

Utah reliever Jaden Harris (2-0) earned the win in one inning of work.
