Washington Commanders coach Ron Rivera’s mom, Dolores, died

Washington Commanders coach Ron Rivera’s mother, Dolores, died on Monday night, the team announced.

Rivera flew to visit his mom and spend time with her for two days last week in California, the organization said. He returned to the team in time for their 17-16 win over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.

“Coach Rivera is grateful he was able to spend two days with her last week,” the team said in a statement, in part. “The Snyders and the entire Commanders family extend their heartfelt condolences to Coach Rivera and his family.

“The Rivera family would like to say thank you for the many kind thoughts and prayers they have received.”

Rivera, 60, is in his third season in Washington after spending nine seasons leading the Carolina Panthers. He’s compiled an 18-23 record so far with the Commanders, and is off to a 4-4 start this season.

The Commanders will host the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday afternoon at FedEx Field. It's unclear if Rivera will miss time with the team this week, or if he will coach on Sunday. Funeral arrangements, the team said, are still pending.
