Warriors win district title with strong second half performance

Feb. 29—Southwestern was looking for their 12th district title in a row on Thursday night, as they took on Wayne County, a team that has improved rapidly throughout the season. After the Lady Cardinals took down the Warriors at the Wig Wam earlier this month, this one was up in the air as far as a winner is concerned.

Both teams started cold from the field and were tied 6-6 at the end of the first quarter as a result. An early 7-1 run by Jaelyn Dye gave Southwestern a lead they would never relinquish that turned into a 26-17 lead at the half for the hosts. It was all Southwestern after the break though, as they outscored Wayne County 36-22 to take home a comfortable 62-39 victory for yet another district title on their march to reclaim their throne as the best in the 12th Region. Payton Acey led all scorers with 20 points, including 16 of those coming in the second half, with Dye adding 17 points.

Southwestern and Wayne County will advance to next week's 12th Region Tournament at Lincoln County. Look for a full game story in Saturday's edition of the Commonwealth Journal.
