Warriors bring back Payton II to fill final roster spot originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

As expected, Gary Payton II wasn't away from the Warriors long.

On Tuesday, Golden State announced it re-signed the 28-year-old to a contract after waiving him on Friday.

The Athletic's Anthony Slater reported Tuesday that the deal is non-guaranteed which will give the Warriors some flexibility with that roster spot.

Payton saw brief action in 10 games for the Warriors last season but he impressed over the summer and during a brief preseason explosion. Payton missed most of the Warriors' preseason action while recovering from an offseason inguinal hernia surgery.

In Payton II, the Warriors get a defensive-minded guard who can come off the bench and serve as the point-of-attack defender Golden State lacked last season.

The Western Conference is full of dynamic guards, and with Steph Curry and Jordan Poole being offensive-minded guards, the Warriors had a need for a guard who is willing to do the dirty work. After Avery Bradley, who also was waived by the Warriors on Friday, signed with the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday, Payton was an easy choice for the Warriors to bring back.

The Warriors open their season Tuesday night against the Lakers at Staples Center.
