For most of my life, I have not considered myself a "sweater guy." I don't know what combination of inborn and environmental factors contributed to this. I can't point to any specific scarring memory from my formative years, which is either evidence that one didn't occur or a testament to my ability to paper over my past. Whatever the reason, though, I avoided the things like the damn plague. But now there's an actual fucking pandemic taking up all my "avoiding shit" energy, I find few things more comforting than wrapping up in some chunky knitwear and sinking into a soft, sweater-y cocoon.
What changed? Well, there's the armchair-psychology explanation of the world being scary and sweaters being cozy. It's not necessarily wrong. But I think it has more to do with the glut of brands churning out extremely great cardigans of late. A beefy crewneck brings with it the threat of overheating (or just looking overly bulky). But a cardigan? Leave it open, man! Or button it up! Your call! Plus, even though I'm not giving up on my sweatshirts—seriously, no one is advocating for this—man cannot live on fleece alone. So this fall and winter, I would like to pretty much live in Entireworld's expertly executed take on the boxy-ish, just-relaxed-enough cardigan.
It's beefy, not overbearing.
Forget all those nightmarish, scratchy sweaters your grandmother foisted on you when you were but a wee child. This is not one of those. (And, hey, maybe I just discovered that scarring early-life sweater experience, after all!) A super-sleek sweater you can throw under a suit jacket has its place, but right now, that place is not inside my apartment. After months spent in lockdown, with gray days ahead, a little relaxation is in order when it comes to the cut of a cardigan. And this one—slightly slouchy, a bit boxy, but never sloppy—is right in line with what the moment calls for. Bonus: That feeling (just a little looser, both in size and vibe) is also right in line with where most of menswear is going. So take it easy. I promise, you've earned it.
The colors!
Not to get too "just took a gigantic bong rip" on you, but look at that color. That's the deep, luxurious hue of some forgotten cove beckoning you into its calm and mild waters. It's the color of a pair of eyes gazing into yours and offering comfort in times of trouble. It's...well, it's a really great, nigh-universally flattering blue-green. If that doesn't strike your fancy, I have two things to say to you. First, I will never truly understand you, dear reader. But I will still tell you that this sweater also comes in a rich camel, a goes-with-every-damn-thing gray, and an adventurous shade of bubblegum pink. Hell, get one of each. You've got a lot of time for cocooning ahead of you.
