Wake Forest rallies in fourth quarter to upset UVA in ACC Tournament opener

Elise Williams scored a game-high 25 points, including 11 in the decisive fourth quarter, to lead 14th-seeded Wake Forest to a 58-55 victory over No. 11 seed Virginia in a women’s basketball ACC Tournament opener Wednesday night in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The Demon Deacons (7-24) — winners of just two regular-season ACC games — play No. 6 seed Florida State in the second round Thursday. UVA finished its season at 15-15 as it failed to build on its electric upset Sunday night of then-No. 5 Virginia Tech before a state-record crowd.

Williams finished 3 of 4 on 3-pointers and 12 of 14 on free throws and also finished with a team-high nine rebounds. Her 11 points in the fourth quarter helped Wake Forest outscore the Cavaliers 23-9 in the final period.

The Demon Deacons finished with a decided advantage at the free-throw line, making 17 of 21. UVA finished 2 of 4 from the line.

Camryn Taylor (18 points) and Kymora Johnson (15 points) led UVA. Wake’s Alexandria Scruggs finished with 12 points.
