Sam Bennett won the second Vuelta a España stage of his career on Saturday when the Irishman eased across the line in Oviedo after a huge crash brought down scores of riders in the peloton.

The Bora-Hansgrohe sprinter completed the 188km stage from San Vicente de la Barquer in 4hr 28min 46sec, a few bike lengths ahead of Maximiliano Richeze (Deceuninck-Quick Step) and Tosh Van der Sande (Lotto-Soudal) who finished second and third respectively.

Despite a number of general classification riders hitting the deck or getting caught up behind the chaos, the riders were all handed the same time due to the three-kilometre rule. As a result, there were no changes at the top of the overall standings though it remains to be seen what impact any injuries have when racing resumes on Sunday with the 154.4km 15th stage from Tineo to Santuario del Acebo.

Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) will carry his 2min 25sec lead over Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) ito Sunday's stage while Tadej Pogacar (UAE-Team Emirates) remains in third place at 3min 1sec.

Meanwhile, Roglic's team-mate Dylan Groenewegen (Jumbo-Visma) won stage one at the Tour of Britain where the Durtchman beat Davide Cimolai (Israel Cycling Academy) and Matteo Trentin (Mitchelton-Scott) to the line in Glasgow.
