Volcano Vista, Belen boys, and Atrisco Heritage girls lead after first day of state wrestling

Feb. 23—Defending Class 5A boys wrestling champion Volcano Vista is showing the way after Friday's opening day of the 2024 Class 5A state tournament at the Rio Rancho Events Center.

The Hawks scored 118 points after the first couple of rounds Friday. They lead District 1-5A rival Cleveland by three points in the team standings.

Los Lunas, La Cueva and Atrisco Heritage round out the top five, although Los Lunas is 33 points behind Cleveland for second place.

The Class 4A team standings are extremely tight at the top.

Belen, the 2023 state champion, leads with 89 points, but Bloomfield is only a point behind, and third-place Aztec has scored 85 points.

Miyamura was a distant fourth in the 4A standings.

The Volcano Vista girls, like the boys, are trying to defend their state championship from a year ago, but the Hawks are going to have to come from behind on Saturday to do that.

Atrisco Heritage has the first-day lead, with 67 points. Volcano Vista scored 56 points Friday, and Cleveland (52.5) is in third place.

The semifinals in all three divisions begin at 10 a.m Saturday. The finals are scheduled for 5:30 p.m at the Rio Rancho Events Center.

SWIMMING/DIVING: The finals of this year's state meet will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Albuquerque Academy Natatorium. The diving finals will be contested roughly in the middle of the swim finals.
