Vanecek recalled, but Samsonov will start against Toronto originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington

Goalie Vitek Vanecek was recalled by the Capitals on Monday from a conditioning stint with the Hershey Bears. Ilya Samsonov, however, will get the start in Monday's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Vanecek suffered an upper-body injury on Feb. 1 against the Pittsburgh Penguins in a collision with Kasperi Kapanen. That injury led to him being put on injured reserve. He was sent to Hershey for conditioning and started Sunday's game against the Utica Comets. He made 21 saves on 23 shots.

Despite getting recalled Monday, it will be Samsonov who will get the start in Monday's game. Toronto, coming off a 10-goal game on Saturday, would be a tough assignment for a goalie who played the day before and who has not played an NHL game since Feb. 1.

"[Vanecek's] available now to come into games," head coach Peter Laviolette said. "I think we're just making sure that Vitek is good, his timing's good, he's conditioned and he's in a right spot to go and win a game. It's one of those positions where you have to be on point. Last night was part of the process where he was able to go down and get some games. He's with us now, he's back up here and so he's available to us."

Samsonov has gone 4-4-0 with a .907 save percentage and 3.04 GAA in Vanecek's absence.

Here are the lines from the morning skate:

Alex Ovechkin - Evgeny Kuznetsov - Tom Wilson

Conor Sheary - Nicklas Backstrom - T.J. Oshie

Connor McMichael - Lars Eller - Daniel Sprong

Carl Hagelin - Nic Dowd - Garnet Hathaway

Martin Fehervary - John Carlson

Matt Irwin (likely just in place of Orlov) - Nick Jensen

Michal Kempny - Trevor van Riemsdyk

Justin Schultz participated in the morning skate, but is considered a game-time decision and was not among the top-six defensemen in the line rushes. Orlov was not present at the morning skate for personal reasons, but he is expected to play in the game.

Sprong took part in line rushes, but remained on the ice after the skate and skated with the scratches so his status for Monday seems uncertain.
