Vikings WR Diggs signs 5-year contract extension

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Stefon Diggs has signed a five-year contract extension, the team announced Tuesday.

According to multiple reports, it will be worth $81 million, including around $40 million guaranteed.

The deal will keep Diggs, 24, with the Vikings through 2023. The fourth-year wideout was scheduled to make $1.9 million in 2018, the final year of his rookie contract.

"To Vikings fans and everybody, you guys are stuck with me for a little longer," Diggs said with a smile in a video posted on the team's Twitter account. "I just signed my extension, I'm happy to be a part of this organization. I want to thank the Wilfs, I want to thank all the coaches, everybody involved, and my teammates -- the guys that pushed me to get to this point.

"My family, my mom... it means a lot to me right now. I can't really show it so much, but it's inside and I'm really happy. Thank you for everything, thank you for the support. Let's keep this show on the road, and let's win."

Fellow wideout Adam Thielen tweeted his congratulations to Diggs, writing, "Congrats to my guy! So happy and proud of you bro! One of the real ones right here #letsgoooooo"

A fifth-round selection from Maryland in the 2015 NFL Draft, Diggs gained 849 yards on 64 receptions last season. He also scored eight touchdowns. He became the first player in NFL history to record at least 13 receptions in consecutive games with 13 vs. Detroit and 13 at Washington last November.

No catch is more memorable than the one he made in the NFC playoffs last season. In the game that has been dubbed the "Minneapolis Miracle," Diggs scored on a 61-yard catch-and-run as time expired. Minnesota beat New Orleans 29-24 to move on to the NFC Championship Game.

For his three-year career, Diggs has 200 receptions, 2,472 yards and 15 touchdowns.

The extension comes two days after Diggs told reporters he wanted to be in Minnesota long-term, saying, "I love it here, I love being a part of this organization."

It's the third major deal the Vikings have given to a contract-year former draft pick this offseason, joining linebacker Eric Kendricks and defensive end Danielle Hunter. Minnesota also has linebacker Anthony Barr entering the final year of his rookie contract.
