Rice holds off rival Burlington in D-I boys basketball title game


D-II boys basketball championship

No. 2 Montpelier 58, No. 1 Hartford 49

M: Carson Cody 17 points. Atif Milak 16 points. Kleo Bridge 13 points. Carter Bruzzese 8 points.

H: Sean Dunton 12 points. Brody Tyburski 9 points. Kole Fotion 9 points.

Note: A 15-2 run to close the second quarter, paced by Cody's dozen points, put the Solons in the driver's seat. Hartford cut the deficit to five points, 52-47, with 1:22 to play before Montpelier clinched the four-peat at the foul line. The Solons are the first D-II program since Burr and Burton in 1979 to seize four consecutive state titles.

D-III boys basketball championship

H: Xavier 17 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists. Brendan Moodie 16 points.

Note: Thetford rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit to seize its first crown in four years.

D-IV boys basketball championship

At Barre Auditorium

No. 2 Grace Christian 52, No. 1 Danville 41

GC: Vojin Cosic 15 points. Baran Turan 12 points. Danilo Ignjatovic 10 points.

D: Cooper Calkins 15 points. Andrew Joncas 10 points.

Note: A 17-10 third quarter helped the Lions erase a 23-19 halftime deficit and capture the program's first championship in their third year as a VPA member.

D-I girls hockey semifinals

Note: MacLellan and McHugh scored about two minutes apart in the opening period as the Sealakers blanked the Kingdom Blades to reach the D-I final for the fourth time in five seasons.

Note: Airoldi's two goals on the power play in the middle period broke a 1-all tie and marched the Thunderbirds to their first final in nine years.

Note: Romanko's rebound goal cut the MMU deficit to 2-1 to close the second period. In the final frame, Van Mullen set up Bradley on the doorstep and then uncorked a wrister that clanged off the post twice for a 4-1 Wolves margin. Poquette tapped in a fifth goal as South Burlington marched on to its first title game since 2015.
