Varsity Packers tennis wins round one of region tournament

Mar. 30—MOULTRIE — The Packers varsity tennis team won the first round of the region tournament 3-1 against Lowndes on Thursday.

"This was the most complete match we've played all season," said head coach Mell Wier.

Wins came from both doubles teams and No. 2 singles.

Number one doubles team of Ty Hurst and Parker Anderson have played 11 matches this season, winning nine of them.

Jack Taunton and Harrison Sims, number two doubles, have won seven of their nine matches.

Solo singles player to win against Lowndes, Joshua Scroggins has won five of his six matches.

"Even in defeat we were strong,' said Mell. "Bailee Fountain made the best player in the region fight for every point and Jared Rodriguez, who has shared his time with Daniel Basilio at number three singles, had the best match of his career."

Rodriguez split the first two sets and was midway through the tiebreaker when the Packers received enough points to win and he was pulled from the court.

The Packers will play the second round of the region tournament on April 9 when they play against Camden County at Packer Park.

Matches will begin at 9 a.m.
