USD women outpace Mavericks for road overtime win

Dec. 31—OMAHA, Neb. — Kendall Holmes scored seven of the Coyotes' 11 points in overtime on Sunday, and the University of South Dakota women's basketball team picked up a road victory over Omaha 77-71 at Baxter Arena.

The Mavericks scored five of the first seven points in overtime before Holmes drilled a 3-pointer to tie the game at 71-all with 2:46 left. Nicole Avila-Ambrosi hit a pair of free throws with 1:55 left to give the Coyotes the lead for good. The teams traded empty possessions into the final seconds, including denying an Omaha Grace Cave 3-pointer with 8 seconds left and Holmes drilled four more free throws in the final four seconds to lock up the road win.

Holmes, the junior transfer from DePaul, finished with 18 points, while Grace Larkins played all 45 minutes and logged 22 points and 11 rebounds for the Coyotes. Tori DePerry had 12 points for USD, as well. The Coyotes were 16-for-18 on free throws in the win and shot 41.9% from the field, including a 9-for-26 day on 3-pointers.

Omaha led 37-34 at halftime before the Coyotes scored 20 points for a 54-49 lead going to the fourth quarter. Cave had 17 points and nine rebounds for the Mavericks (4-9, 0-2 Summit). Aaliyah Stanley had 15 points and Kennedi Grant had 12 points.

USD (11-4, 1-1 Summit) will play two games in the Big Sky-Summit Challenge starting on Wednesday, Jan. 3 at Montana, before returning home to host Idaho State on Jan. 6.
