USC beats Arizona State, clinches winning season for 2023 Trojans

The USC Trojans baseball team has struggled away from home this season, but at Dedeaux Field, USC has been a consistent winner. That pattern continued Friday night on the USC campus. The Trojans beat Arizona State 4-1. They once again won on their home field, collecting their 24th home win of a season in which they have won 29 games.

That win total ensures USC will finish with a winning record, just the third time since 2005 the Trojans will end a season above the .500 mark. It’s a tangible sign of how much the program has improved under first-year head coach Andy Stankiewicz, who has USC baseball fans excited for the future.

Beyond the fact that the Trojans clinched a winning record, the win over Arizona State carried a much bigger and more immediate level of significance: It improved their spot on the NCAA Tournament bubble. The Trojans are viewed as a team which is squarely on the bubble. USC would be in good shape if it can sweep this weekend series against Arizona State, but it absolutely must win two of three.

Game 2 of this series is on Saturday, with Game 3 set for Sunday.
