USC Aiken softball sweeps Converse

Feb. 24—USC AIKEN 3-8, CONVERSE 1-0

The USC Aiken softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep of Converse on Saturday by scores of 3-1 and 8-0.

The Pacers are now 9-3 on the season.

"I think we bounced back really well in game two," head coach Jaclin Poole said. "We talked a lot about making our adjustments at the plate. Game one was a little slow for us offensively, so we took those changes to heart. We had a good day both games, but especially game two."

Payton Baker tossed a complete-game four-hitter in game one, allowing just a solo home run in the top of the third inning. The reigning Peach Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week struck out eight.

Her offense didn't wait long to put her in line for the win. The Pacers plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead for good.

For the game, Chloe Phillips had two RBI while Austyn Dixon, Mallory Shaver, Morley, and Kate Newberry all had hits. Shaver registered a triple while Chloe Phillips had a double.

Lakyn Phillips went the distance in game two, striking out six while allowing five hits in five shutout innings.

The Pacers broke open the game in the third inning with three runs, then added five more in the fourth.

Skylar Morley scored first on a wild pitch, and Lydia Johnson hit a two-run home run for a 3-0 lead. Dixon doubled with the bases loaded in the fourth to bring in two more runs, and then Shaver smoked a three-run homer to put the Pacers up 8-0.

With her two stolen bases in the doubleheader, Morley moved into a tie for 10th place in school history for career steals with 34.

The Pacers return to action at 1 p.m. Sunday when they host Claflin for a doubleheader.
