  • American beats compatriot in three-hole play-off at Southern Hills to claim second major

  • Chilean Pereira had one-shot lead on 18th tee box, but finds the water and double bogeys

Justin Thomas lifted his second major title after an excruciating concluding day of the US PGA Championship.

Starting seven off the overnight lead, the American made the biggest winning comeback in the final round of a major since Paul Lawrie’s 10-shot overhaul at Carnoustie 23 years ago.

Following a swashbuckling 67 to reach five-under, Thomas beat countryman Will Zalatoris in a three-hole playoff, birdieing the 17th and closing it out on the 18th. Thomas was impeccable on the back nine - which he played in three-under - as well in the shootout.

Alongside was caddie Jim “Bones” Mackay, who used to work for Phil Mickelson before a fall-out over unpaid wages. A penny for the thoughts of Mickelson, who decided not to defend his crown at Southern Hills due to the ongoing Saudi controversy.

“Bones did an unbelievable job of just keeping me in the moment today,” Thomas, 29, said.

“We just tried to play the course for what it is. It's funny, I was asked earlier in the week about what lead is safe, and I said, 'no lead'.

"This place is so tough. But if you hit the fairways you can make birdies, and I stayed so patient. I just couldn't believe I found myself in a play-off.”

With respect to Thomas, the former world No 1 who returns to the top 5 in the rankings and for whom this follow up to his 2017 Wanamaker Trophy success is long overdue, this major will be as much remembered for the golfing brutality inflicted on Mito Pereira.

On the 18th in regulation, the 27-year-old ranked 100th in the world and without a top-flight title to his unheralded name, needed a par to become the first Chilean to win a major.

Yet he found the water off the tee and could only manage a double-bogey for a 75 to fall back to four-under and into a tie for third with yet another American in Cameron Young. Pereira was magnanimity personified in the wake of that meltdown, handing certain golf superstars a lesson in how to react to bitter disappointment.

"On Monday I wanted to make the cut; on Sunday I wanted to win,” Pereira said.

“I hold to that and learn for the future. Today I was really nervous. I thought I was going to win on 18, but it is what it is. I never even thought about the water. We'll have another one.”

A further shot behind on three-under was Matt Fitzpatrick and Tommy Fleetwood. And so England’s long wait for a USPGA victor will stretch into a 104th year. That was confirmed when Fitzpatrick’s campaign to fill the void to Jim Barnes fizzled out in timid fashion.

Going out in the final group on the Sunday of a major for the first time, Fitzpatrick inspired such hope of taking the Wanamaker Trophy back to Sheffield, but in the event his previously impervious poise failed the 27-year-old.

A 71 would have earned him a berth in that play-off. Instead he had to be content with his best finish in a major.

“It's tough to take,” he said. “I just didn't hit very well. It’s just disappointing knowing that you're two shots outside of a playoff and you feel like you've got the game  to go on to win.

“I shoot level par today and I win it outright. If someone had said that before the round, I'd have fully prepared myself to do that. You know your target and get it around. It wasn't the day that I wanted, and it is what it is unfortunately.”

The world No 17 bogeyed the first after hooking his drive and, despite birdieing the fourth, after a lovely chip to chip to two feet, his renowned scrambling powers suddenly abandoned him. There was a glimmer when he birdied the 15th to get back to within two of the pace, but then he bogeyed the drivable 17th. A three-over 73 was never going to get it done.

In truth, regardless of Fitzpatrick’s dismay, this was a highly satisfactory display by the St George contingent, with two representatives in the top five and Justin Rose and Tyrrell Hatton tying for 13th on level par courtesy of a pair of 68s.

Fleetwood birdied five in six holes from the 12th, with four in a row from the 14th, to claim his best major finish since second at the 2019 Open, his second runner-up after the 2018 US Open. As high as world No 8 four years ago, he was down to 44th coming into this season’s second male major and without a win in two-and-a-half years. This 67 could be the spark he has required to relight the fire.

“I never thought it was enough to challenge, but it was great,” Fleetwood said.

“Once I got off the bogey train on the 11th [he had bogeyed the previous four holes] where I managed to hit the green and two-putt, things picked up. I had the juices flowing down the back nine. Majors mean a lot to everyone, and to have what's going to be the best result of the year is a good feeling.”

One back from Fitzpatrick and Fleetwood came Rory McIlroy. It was the same old storyline for the Northern Irishman. Let us just remark that this is not the first time he has produced a Sunday charge with everyone knowing that as exhilarating as it may well be, it was ultimately doomed to fall short.

At last month’s Masters, McIlroy shot a 64 to finish second behind Scottie Scheffler and at this US PGA he fired a 68 to get back to two-under and leap from 17th into eighth. However it could and should have been so much more for this supreme talent who has gone eight years since winning the most recent of his four majors.

McIlroy grabbed the first-round lead in an opening 65, lost it in a sloppy second-round 71, but was still in contention when he reached the par-three sixth on Saturday.

There he hit his tee-shot into the water on his way to a double-bogey five, proceeded to bogey the next two and then on the sixth hole of this calamitous, major-wrecking run, took a triple-bogey six of the par-three 11th when failing to get on the green in two and three-putting.

McIlroy bounced back with three birdies in four holes from the 13th, but three-putted the 18th and was nine behind on the penultimate evening. An also-ran. But from these forlorn positions, McIlroy invariably comes rattling through and so he birdied four in a row from second to create a “he couldn't, could he?” murmur.

“No,” was the emphatic answer. McIlroy unfathomably played the remainder of his round in two-over, missing five putts under 15 feet, and departed Oklahoma with a what-could-have-been angst that must have been awfully familiar. But for that maniacal 90 minutes... if only he had played that final 13 holes on Sunday in one-under…

McIlroy declined to speak to reporters for the second time in as many days. Not good.

Justin Thomas wins US PGA Championship - as it happened

11:36 PM

Justin Thomas wins the US PGA Championship!

Zalatoris' birdie putt leaks left and JT knows a two-putt will win him his second Wanamaker Trophy.

He trickles one down the slope and taps in for his second major!!

11:32 PM

Both find the green on 18

Zalatoris has 182 to the flag and it comes up a little shy, but just about stays on the green.

JT has 165 and plays a fine approach - he's four yards closer than he was in regulation and will have a 20-foot putt for birdie and a second major.

11:25 PM

Thomas takes driver on 18

Having seen what happened to Pereira I thought he'd take three-wood - but what do I know...he nails the drive and will have an eight iron, or a similar club, to attack the green with.

Zalatoris also plays a fine drive - nothing much between the two tee shots.

11:21 PM

Thomas takes the lead with one hole to play

Zalatoris plays a fine chip to leave himself with a six-footer for birdie. JT's eagle putt leaves him with a three-footer for birdie.

The former misses his putt right and the latter makes no mistake. Very much advantage JT now...

Thomas - two-under
Zalatoris - one-under

11:17 PM

He's the form golfer

11:15 PM

From being a fairly flat, dull final round

It's suddenly got interesting over the past 30 minutes...

11:14 PM

Advantage JT

JT takes three-wood at the driveable 17 - he ends up on the green having found the narrowest of gaps between the bunkers.

The heat is now on Zalatoris. His drive leaks to the right and ends up to the right of the righthand bunker.

Advantage to Thomas who'll have a putt for eagle.

11:10 PM

Both birdie the first play-off hole

Thomas plays a delightful wedge to within five-feet - he makes no mistake from below  the hole with his putt. Zalatoris' eagle putt just goes to the left and he taps in for the four.

JT - one-under
Zalatoris - one-under

11:04 PM

JT lays up as Zalatoris is on the green in two

Zalatoris was in position A1 and his approach from 218 finds the left centre of the green - definitely advantage to the world No.30 over the world No. 9.

11:02 PM

Mito Pereira is speaking to media at the moment

“I thought I was going to win on 18, but it is what it is.”

10:59 PM

Matt Fitzpatrick speaks...

"I just wasn't on it from the start today...it's disappointing."

10:58 PM

JT's drive on 13 finds the right rough

Zalatoris' finds the fairway - early advantage for the world No. 30.

10:55 PM

Here's how it unravelled for poor Pereira

10:54 PM

The three holes are...

The par five-13th, the driveable 17th and the 18th.

10:53 PM

The play-off is a three-hole affair

JT will be the favourite after his 67 earlier.

10:53 PM

Mito Pereira has his head in his hands

When it should have been the Wanamaker...you have to feel for him.

10:50 PM

Pereira's putt is short

From off the green - his next putt finds the bottom of the cup but it's too little too late. That's a double bogey for the Chilean when he had one hand on the famous trophy. Horrible to watch - he ends on four-under, a round of five-over and ends tied for second.

Fitzpatrick closes with a par and finishes on three-under. His round, much like the other leading players, never got going.

10:44 PM

Pereira's chip goes off the green

He now has a chip to just make the play off. Horrible to watch...

10:41 PM

Pereira over the back of the green on 18

The Chilean takes a drop - as you do when you end up in the drink - and hits his approach (his third) just long. He now has a tricky chip to win the tournament. Two shots will get him into a three-way play-off with JT and Zalatoris.

10:39 PM

Oh dear...

10:36 PM

Zalatoris makes par at 18

Thanks to an outstanding up and down - he's five-under for the tournament and the way things are looking for Pereira that looks as though it could be good enough to get him into a play-off with JT...

10:35 PM

Disaster for Pereira at the 18th

His drive has found the hazard - he tried to play a low stinger and it drifted to the right and into the creek. Not sure why he didn't use three-wood under the circumstances - he'll do well to make five from there.

10:33 PM

Pereira 's birdie putt at 17...

...is one revolution from dropping in the hole. So, so, so close...

He's still in control with a one-shot lead on six-under and knows par at the last will win him the Wanamaker Trophy.

Fitzpatrick's race is definitely run, he bogeys the same hole and is back to three-under. He never really got going today.

10:26 PM

Poor tee shots from both Zalatoris and Young

At the last. Not what they wanted.

10:25 PM

Pereira takes driver at 17

He carries the creek and comes up just short of the green - to state the obvious, an up and down would be perfect timing.

Meanwhile, Fitzpatrick's drive nearly finds the water but it stays dry, just...

10:22 PM

Zalatoris is hanging on!

A birdie at the 17th gets him back to five-under, one off the lead. This is getting tight...

Playing partner Young also birdies 17 and is back to four-under - having said his race was run, a birdie at 18 gets him to five-under.

10:18 PM

JT misses the birdie putt on 18

He ends on five-under and gives Pereira a bit of breathing room, not a lot, but possibly enough for the Chilean to win this thing.

JT ties for the best round of the day with a 67 - he was eight shots back three hours ago... Will his five-under be enough?

10:15 PM

Pereira's shown guts on the greens today

The Chilean nails the 10-footer at 16 to stay at six-under. He still looks calm out there as he walks to the driveable 17 - he laid up yesterday, what will he do today?

10:12 PM

Great shot from JT at 18

He has 169 to the elevated green and a smooth eight iron is fired to 10 feet - he'll have that putt to get to six-under. Interesting...

10:10 PM

Pereira has a nervy 10-footer for par at the 16th

His chip races past the hole and he once again need nerves of steel to stay at six-under.

10:08 PM

I am tempted to write

'No one wants to win this' - which is obviously nonsense,  as they all do - but no one, bar JT, has really made a move today.

JT takes driver at the tee on 18 and it's a peach - he couldn't place it any better.

Meanwhile, Young's race looks to have been run. He double bogeys to 16th and is back to  three-under. Playing partner Zalatoris bogeys and he's back to four-under. All good news for Pereira.

10:01 PM

Pereira's birdie putt at 15 just misses

And as I type JT complete his up down on 17 to move to five-under, a three-way tie for second.

Fitzpatrick birdies 15 witha  a fantastic chip and he's back to four-under, definitely not out of it.

09:57 PM

Not a tournament to remember for the Big Names

09:53 PM

JT finds the greenside bunker on 17

It's not a bad place to be on the drivable par four. He'll be able to get his chip close the pin. The American's on four-under at the moment - the way things are going you think five-under may have a chance of victory.

09:49 PM

Dropped shot from Pereira

Having birdied the 13th the leader then goes and bogeys the par-three 14th - his tee shot was pulled and his flop shot chip leaves him a 10 footer for par, but the Chilean cannot make the putt. He's back to six-under,  and the lead is cut to one.

09:48 PM

Here's that great up and down from Zalatoris from earlier

09:38 PM

Pereira now with a two-shot lead

As I predicted the Chilean drains the one-footer (not exactly Nostradamus, I admit...) and he's back to seven-under. Two shots clear of Young and Zalatoris.

Fitzpatrick's birdie putt lips out (agony!) and he stays on three-under.

09:36 PM

Young back to five-under

Having found the bunker he cannot get up and down and falls back to five-under - Pereira once again has the sole lead.

The Chilean is about to go two clear as his eagle putt goes a tad long, but leaves him with one foot putt for a birdie.

09:35 PM

Hurry up!

The final group have had a warning about slow play - they are not on the clock but have been told to get a wriggle on...

09:32 PM

Great approach from Pereira

At the par-five 13th. He'll have a 15-foot putt for an eagle - he should get back to seven-under at the very least.

09:31 PM

JT misses great birdie chance on 15

It looks like a misread as it breaks at the last moment. He's stays at four-under.

09:29 PM

Young finds the bunker

At the par-three 14th. He'll have a tough bunker shot now - just at the moment he's sharing the lead. Big shot to come.

Playing partner Zalatoris finds the green, at five-under the American is hanging in there.

09:27 PM

Cameron Young is in form

09:26 PM

Pereira drops shot at 12

His approach was brilliant but he cannot drain the eight-foot putt - he's mystified that it breaks to the left at the last moment.

He's back to six-under, sharing the lead with Cameron Young, who as I type nearly birdies the 13th.

09:25 PM

Tommy Fleetwood ends on three-under

He is tied for the lowest round of the day - a 67 - thanks to five birdies in his last seven holes.

Tommy Fleetwood - GETTY IMAGES
Tommy Fleetwood - GETTY IMAGES

09:20 PM

Pereira has 88 yards to the pin at 12

And he plays a peach of an approach to leave himself with an eight footer for his par. He's been calm under pressure the past few holes - he's had three good saves, can he keep up the streak?

09:19 PM

Pereira chips out from the rough

After his drive finds the long grass on the 12th hole. He took his medicine and now has an up and down for par.

Meanwhile, Thomas holds a tricky par putt on the 14th to stay at four-under.

09:13 PM

Fitzpatrick drops a shot at the 11th

A poor tee shot nearly found the creek to the left, his chip leaves him with a 15-footer for par but he pulls his putt and that's back-to-back bogeys. He's on three-under now, four back of Pereira who downs his six-foot putt for par.

09:07 PM

Young misses birdie putt at the 12th

That would have got the American to seven-under and a share of the lead.

09:06 PM

JT misses the birdie putt

That would have got him to five-under. A missed opportunity for the American.

09:04 PM

JT lays up from 237 at the 13th

His third shot leaves him with a 15-footer for birdie - that would get him to five-under and the way the leaders are playing you think five-under might have a chance. Can the American post the clubhouse lead? You think he'd have to hole the upcoming putt.

09:02 PM

Pereira with another great up and down

His chip from down the slope over the back of the 10th green is perfection - leaving him with a one-footer for par. Fitzpatrick, however, cannot copy his playing partner and drops a shot to fall back to four-under, three back of the Chilean leader.

09:00 PM

Rory's race is run

He started his round on fire - four-under through five - but he lost momentum and walks off the 18th green having carded a two-under 68, to finish the championship one two-under. He's still without a major since 2014 - when will the star from Holywood get his mitts on another? Answers on a postcard please...

08:57 PM

Mistake from Pereira at the 10th

The leader goes long with his approach and the ball rolls down the hill to leave him with a treacherous up and down for par.

08:51 PM

Nerves of steel from Pereira

His approach to the ninth found the bunker and he shortsided himself. His chip from the sand leaves him with a breaking 15-foot putt which he nails. That could so easily have been another dropped shot but the Chilean stops the rot. Fitzpatrick also does well to walk off with a par. He stays at five-under. Two shots back of his playing partner.

Mito Pereira - SHUTTERSTOCK
Mito Pereira - SHUTTERSTOCK

08:47 PM

JT makes it back-to-back birdies

His drive leaves him with a lob wedge into the 12th green and the American nails the birdie putt. He's now at four-under, moving in the right direction while the leaders are going backwards.

08:45 PM

Woe for Rory, joy for Tommy

McIlroy goes over the green at the 17th and ends up making bogey, he's back to two-over. After that fast start his round has stalled somewhat.

Fleetwood, meanwhile, birdies the 16th, his fourth birdie in five holes. He's now at two-under.

08:42 PM

Fitzpatrick and Pereira

Both find trouble with their tee shots at the ninth. The Englishman makes a fantastic recovery finding the back of the green. The Chilean, however, finds the greenside bunker and will have a tough up and down for par.

08:36 PM

Pereira bogeys the eighth

His tee shot is short and right at the par three. He gets poor contact with his chip and cannot make the 15-footer for a three.

His lead is now cut to one at seven-under.

Fitzpatrick meanwhile manages to do what the Chilean couldn't get up and down for par. The Englishman is on five-under, two back of the lead.

08:34 PM

Young is within two-shots of the lead

The American birdies the ninth and is on six-under.

08:32 PM

JT drains a monster putt at the 10th

He uses the putter from just off the green and it's a great decision as the drops from all of about 40+ feet.

He's not out of it at three-under.

08:30 PM

Tommy Fleetwood in the red

Thanks to three birdies in four holes - at the 12th, 14th and 15th - he at one-under now.

08:24 PM

Dropped shot for Pereira at the seventh

His drive found the trees on the left and the Chilean was unable to make his four. He's now at eight-under - a lead of two from Zalatoris who made a par three after a poor tee shot at the eighth.

08:20 PM

More trouble for Zalatoris

Another par three - this one the eighth - and another long tee shot. This one stays dry but he'll have a tricky up and down to stay at six-under.

08:14 PM

Back-to-back bogeys for Zalatoris

The American is back to six-under. Having found the right rough he is unable to make four at the seventh. Young, his playing partner, is also on six-under. After the opening bogey he's birdied the second and fifth.

08:11 PM

JT out in level par

Justin Thomas hasn't made the move he'd have liked - he bogeyed three and six cancelling out the birdies at five and nine. The American remains on two-under.

Justin Thomas - GETTY IMAGES

08:07 PM

Good up and down from Fitzpatrick

Having found the water at the sixth he manages to limit the damage to just a bogey four. Pereira makes a three and is looking calm out there - the Chilean leads by two on nine-under.

08:01 PM

Fitzpatrick finds the water

At the sixth - with a five-iron he pulls his tee shot slightly and it comes up short, ending in the drink. Having to back to six-under he now has to limit the damage.

08:00 PM

Pereira isn't showing any nerves

After a long wait on the tee box, while Zalatoris worked out where to take his drop, he plays a fine tee shot at the par-three sixth.

07:56 PM

Zalatoris takes his time trying to work out where to drop

At the sixth. After deliberation with the official he drops on the cart path and plays his third shot off the concrete to within sixth feet - an incredible shot. He makes a four which so easily could have been a five or worse. That's one of the better fours we'll see this week. Seve-esque...He's back to seven-under and Pereira has the sole lead again.

07:51 PM

Pereira drains the birdie putt

At the fifth and is back to nine-under, where he started the day. That's one-shot lead and it looks as though that will grow as Zalatoris is on trouble at the sixth

Meanwhile, Fitzpatrick makes a par at the fifth - he'll be disappointed with that - a poor bunker shot not helping him at all.

07:47 PM

Another birdie chance is missed by Rory

Having birdied four in a row - from the second to the fifth - he's one-over for the next  eight holes. His birdie putt at the 13th just misses on the high side from 10 feet.

07:45 PM

He may have dropped a shot

But Pereira is looking solid and nerveless. At the par-five fifth he lays up, but his approach  - from 137 yards - is stiffed to five feet and he'll have that to get back to nine-under.

07:43 PM

Zalatoris in trouble at the sixth

He found the bushes over the green and having birdied the fifth he'll have a very tough job to avoid giving the shot right back at the very next hole.

07:39 PM

Zalatoris has chance of eagle at the fifth

It's a long hole but the American's second gives him a 25-footer for a three - the putt is a bit shy but he holes the fourth for a birdie to join Pereira at eight-under. That's back-to-back birdies for the world No. 30.

07:31 PM

Fitzpatrick only two back of the lead now!

The Englishman nails his birdie putt at the fourth and moves to six-under. He's two back of Pereira rather than three because the Chilean misses his birdie putt on the same hole and stays at eight-under.

07:29 PM

Missed chance for Rory

As he's done all week the Northern Irishman bombs his drive at the signature hole. He's only got 50 or so yards for his approach but he cannot get up and down and he stays at three-under.

07:26 PM

Pereira plays a fine approach to the green at the fourth

He only has a wedge in his hand but the ball flies over the flag and he'll have a six-footer for birdie to get the shot dropped at three right back.

Fitzpatrick plays an equally fine approach and can move to six-under if he can hole his five-footer.

07:22 PM

Pereira has been in fine form

The Chilean has 19 consecutive rounds of par or better - the longest active streak on the PGA Tour.

07:21 PM

Zalatoris moves to within one of the lead

The American plays a delightful approach to the fourth that leaves him with a three-footer for bridie. He makes no mistake and moves to seven-under, one off Pereira.

Zalatoris - GETTY IMAGES
Zalatoris - GETTY IMAGES

07:18 PM

Pereira drops a shot at the third

In trouble off the tee - his drive found the right rough and his approach is affected by a tree. But he gets his second shot - 189 yards from the green - out well and leaves him with a one of the more simple up and downs. There are  signs of nerves, however,  as his chip leaves him with a a tricky five-footer for par. The putt lips out and he drops back to eight-under.

Meanwhile, Fitzpatrick has a monster putt for birdie, his attempt just missing. He stays at five-under.

07:10 PM

Justin Thomas is back to one-under

The American bogeyed the third and is in trouble at the fifth - his approach finding the greenside bunker.

07:05 PM

Pars for Pereira and Fitzpatrick

At the second - both two putter - the Chilean from just off the green. They remain on nine-under and five-under respectively.

07:04 PM

Rory pars the 10th

His approach was to the bottom shelf of the green and his birdie putt comes up short. He needs to get back on the birdie train if he is to put the leading players under pressure. He stays at three-under.

06:59 PM

Fitzpatrick has 192 to the flag at the second

Out of the rough the Englishman runs it up to the front of the green. He'll have a long putt for birdie. Pereira's approach is just shy of the green, but it's a relatively easy up and down. He should be fine.

06:54 PM

Two dropped shots for Fleetwood

After a great start the Englishman has handed back the back-to-back birdies with bogeys at seven and eight. He's back to level par - where he started the day.

Tommy Fleetwood - GETTY IMAGES
Tommy Fleetwood - GETTY IMAGES

06:51 PM

Young bounces back

After the opening bogey the American birdies the second and he's back to five-under.

06:51 PM

Early pressure for Fitzpatrick

Fitzpatrick's approach misses the green and his chip leaves him with a 20-footer to save par. He misses it and as with yesterday drops a shot at the first. He's now at five-under. If you are going to make mistakes it's best to get them out of the way early on with plenty of holes to recover the dropped shots.

Pereira makes no mistake and his lead over Zalatoris stays at three.

06:46 PM

Another chance goes begging for Rory

He had a 10-foot putt for birdie at the eighth but it refuses to drop having flirted with the hole. He stays at three-under - probably too far back of the lead.

Rory McIlroy  - GETTY IMAGES
Rory McIlroy - GETTY IMAGES

06:43 PM

Young bogeys the first

The approach from the bunker hurt him and the American is back to four-under. Zalatoris made a four and stays at six-under, three back of Pereira.

06:37 PM

Matt Fitzpatrick's final round has begun

His drive finds the rough on the righthand side - his approach may be blocked by a tree. Not the best start to what could be a seminal day in the 27-year-old's career.

Meanwhile Mito Pereira looks nerveless and bombs a drive down the middle of the fairway.

06:33 PM

Young in trouble at the first

Cameron Young's drive actually didn't fly the bunker and his approach out of the hazard is short - he'll have a tough up and down to save par at the first. Playing partner Zalatoris' approach makes the heart of the green and he'll have a 25-footer for birdie.

06:29 PM

Tommy Fleetwood

Is two-under for the round and tournament - having birdied four and five he nearly made it three in a row but the 20-foot putt at six doesn't drop.

06:27 PM

The penultimate group

Has got their final round under way.

Will Zalatoris' drive manages to avoid the two bunkers (just!) and Cameron Young, the exciting rookie, gets his drive over the same bunkers - he's powerful golfer.

06:24 PM

Nearly a monster birdie putt from Rory

It's from at least 40 feet and it just lips out at the last moment. He could have done with that dropping. He stays at three-under.

06:19 PM

Cam Smith lipped out for a one

And he's lipped out for a two and will have to be content with a par at the eighth. From a possible ace to a hum drum par - that's golf for you...

06:17 PM

Cam Smith is a whisker away from an ace

The Australian's tee shot at the par-three eighth is an inch away from dropping in the cup for a hole in one as it lips out. The world No.4 is one-under for the round and at level par for the tournament.

06:09 PM

Justin Thomas gets his final round under way

The likeable American is on two-under and is definitely one to watch today. His drive catches the right side of the fairway - he's gunning for a second US PGA title.

06:07 PM

Bogey for Rory

He can't afford too many mistakes as he's coming from so far back but he makes one at the sixth. He clunks a chip leaving him a 20-foot putt for par. He just misses it and drops back to three-under.

06:01 PM

Another birdie for Rory!

He's started on fire - he drains the short putt at the fifth and moves to four-under.

Will it be a case of too little too late, as with the Masters?

06:00 PM

Rory has a great chance of a birdie at the fifth

A monster drive is followed up with an approach into the front bunker. But his chip gets it to within four feet and he'll have that putt to get to four-under for the round and tournament.

05:59 PM

Billy Foster speaks...

Matt Fitzpatrick's caddy says...

"I'm going to try and make him relaxed and get him to smile, he has been caught smiling this week...he's a humble lad and the key will be to try and avoid making mistakes."

05:49 PM

McIlroy likes the last round at the US PGA

05:44 PM

Is McIlroy too far back?

He's just birdied the fourth now - and is three-under through four holes and three-under for the championship. He started the day nine shots back of  Pereira and is now six off the lead.

05:30 PM

Rory is being Rory again

Yep, he's birdied the third and is two-under through three holes.

As with the Masters, it's likely to be too little too late.

05:18 PM

A more than decent list to join

05:13 PM

Rory birdies the second

He's now at one-under. If he can put a good round together and post a score in the clubhouse he could put some early pressure on the current leaders.

05:05 PM

Rory pars the first

He was in slight trouble off the tee - his ball finding the rough on the lip of bunker - but his approach is played well and he two putts for his four. He stays at level par.

04:50 PM

Rory gets his final round under way

After the great first round it's not gone according to plan for the Northern Irishman. Can he do what he did at Augusta and put together a great final 18 holes?

04:47 PM

Not a stat  Mito Pereira wants to see

Pereira is playing in just his second major. This is the third time in the past 15 years a player led a major through 54 holes in his second career major start: 2015 Paul Dunne at The Open (shot 78, T-30) 2020 Matthew Wolff at U.S. Open (shot 75, 2nd).

Can it be third time lucky for the Chilean?

If Fitzpatrick is to win today

A lot of it will be down to his superb short game, the Englishman has shown a great touch around the greens so far this week.

04:32 PM

Another 'outsider' to win?

04:21 PM

Jon Rahm's championship is on its last hole

And he's at six-over.

It never really got going for the world No.2 who'll defend his US Open title at Brookline in a month's time.

Matt Fitzpatrick ready for final round challenges

Matt Fitzpatrick cannot wait to get on the first tee and get his final round under way at Southern Hills as he bids to become the first Englishman to win the US PGA Championship in over 100 years. The man from Sheffield says he is relishing the chance to win his first major after a third-round 67 saw him move into tied-second and into the today's final round.

The 27-year-old trails leader Mito Pereira by three shots and will partner the PGA Tour rookie from Chile from 7.35 this evening.

Fitzpatrick has recorded just one top-10 finish in his previous 27 major starts, a the 2016 US Masters, but has won seven times on the DP World Tour, most recently last year's Andalucia Masters at Valderrama.

And he says he is excited by the prospect of battling it out for the second major of the year.

"I'm just looking forward to it," the two-time Ryder Cup player said. "I've spoke about my major record at length with my coaches.

"I've always just said to them, 'I just want to give myself a chance', because I back myself at the end of the day. I feel like whenever I've had a chance in Europe, I've played very well.

"Even over here when I've had chances to win I've played well. I've not lost it. It's a chance to win and I'm looking forward to it more than anything."

Asked how he would spend his time ahead of a late start on Sunday, Fitzpatrick added: "I'm sharing a house with Thomas Pieters this week which has been fun. First time we've done that, so we've had a bit of a laugh this week.

"He'll probably put the basketball on, so I'll probably just sit and pretend to watch and be on my phone and do nothing."

As for Pereira, the Chilean says he'll be ready for whatever challenges come his way.

"Of course, I don't have any experience playing in the final pairing in a major, but I guess I worked for it my whole life basically," Pereira said.

Pereira birdied three of the final six holes of the third round for a one-under-par 69 and the three-shot lead.
