Justin Thomas wins US PGA after play-off victory over Will Zalatoris - and a Mito Pereira meltdown on 18

Justin Thomas lifted his second major title after an excruciating concluding day of the US PGA Championship.

Starting seven off the overnight lead, the American made the biggest winning comeback in the final round of a major since Paul Lawrie’s 10-shot overhaul at Carnoustie 23 years ago.

Following a swashbuckling 67 to reach five-under, Thomas beat countryman Will Zalatoris in a three-hole playoff, birdieing the 17th and closing it out on the 18th. Thomas was impeccable on the back nine - which he played in three-under - as well in the shootout.

Alongside was caddie Jim “Bones” Mackay, who used to work for Phil Mickelson before a fall-out over unpaid wages. A penny for the thoughts of Mickelson, who decided not to defend his crown at Southern Hills due to the ongoing Saudi controversy.

“Bones did an unbelievable job of just keeping me in the moment today,” Thomas, 29, said.

“We just tried to play the course for what it is. It's funny, I was asked earlier in the week about what lead is safe, and I said, 'no lead'.

"This place is so tough. But if you hit the fairways you can make birdies, and I stayed so patient. I just couldn't believe I found myself in a play-off.”

With respect to Thomas, the former world No 1 who returns to the top 5 in the rankings and for whom this follow up to his 2017 Wanamaker Trophy success is long overdue, this major will be as much remembered for the golfing brutality inflicted on Mito Pereira.

On the 18th in regulation, the 27-year-old ranked 100th in the world and without a top-flight title to his unheralded name, needed a par to become the first Chilean to win a major.

Yet he found the water off the tee and could only manage a double-bogey for a 75 to fall back to four-under and into a tie for third with yet another American in Cameron Young. Pereira was magnanimity personified in the wake of that meltdown, handing certain golf superstars a lesson in how to react to bitter disappointment.

"On Monday I wanted to make the cut; on Sunday I wanted to win,” Pereira said.

“I hold to that and learn for the future. Today I was really nervous. I thought I was going to win on 18, but it is what it is. I never even thought about the water. We'll have another one.”

A further shot behind on three-under was Matt Fitzpatrick and Tommy Fleetwood. And so England’s long wait for a USPGA victor will stretch into a 104th year. That was confirmed when Fitzpatrick’s campaign to fill the void to Jim Barnes fizzled out in timid fashion.

Going out in the final group on the Sunday of a major for the first time, Fitzpatrick inspired such hope of taking the Wanamaker Trophy back to Sheffield, but in the event his previously impervious poise failed the 27-year-old.

A 71 would have earned him a berth in that play-off. Instead he had to be content with his best finish in a major.

“It's tough to take,” he said. “I just didn't hit very well. It’s just disappointing knowing that you're two shots outside of a playoff and you feel like you've got the game  to go on to win.

“I shoot level par today and I win it outright. If someone had said that before the round, I'd have fully prepared myself to do that. You know your target and get it around. It wasn't the day that I wanted, and it is what it is unfortunately.”

The world No 17 bogeyed the first after hooking his drive and, despite birdieing the fourth, after a lovely chip to chip to two feet, his renowned scrambling powers suddenly abandoned him. There was a glimmer when he birdied the 15th to get back to within two of the pace, but then he bogeyed the drivable 17th. A three-over 73 was never going to get it done.

In truth, regardless of Fitzpatrick’s dismay, this was a highly satisfactory display by the St George contingent, with two representatives in the top five and Justin Rose and Tyrrell Hatton tying for 13th on level par courtesy of a pair of 68s.

Fleetwood birdied five in six holes from the 12th, with four in a row from the 14th, to claim his best major finish since second at the 2019 Open, his second runner-up after the 2018 US Open. As high as world No 8 four years ago, he was down to 44th coming into this season’s second male major and without a win in two-and-a-half years. This 67 could be the spark he has required to relight the fire.

“I never thought it was enough to challenge, but it was great,” Fleetwood said.

“Once I got off the bogey train on the 11th [he had bogeyed the previous four holes] where I managed to hit the green and two-putt, things picked up. I had the juices flowing down the back nine. Majors mean a lot to everyone, and to have what's going to be the best result of the year is a good feeling.”

One back from Fitzpatrick and Fleetwood came Rory McIlroy. It was the same old storyline for the Northern Irishman. Let us just remark that this is not the first time he has produced a Sunday charge with everyone knowing that as exhilarating as it may well be, it was ultimately doomed to fall short.

At last month’s Masters, McIlroy shot a 64 to finish second behind Scottie Scheffler and at this US PGA he fired a 68 to get back to two-under and leap from 17th into eighth. However it could and should have been so much more for this supreme talent who has gone eight years since winning the most recent of his four majors.

McIlroy grabbed the first-round lead in an opening 65, lost it in a sloppy second-round 71, but was still in contention when he reached the par-three sixth on Saturday.

There he hit his tee-shot into the water on his way to a double-bogey five, proceeded to bogey the next two and then on the sixth hole of this calamitous, major-wrecking run, took a triple-bogey six of the par-three 11th when failing to get on the green in two and three-putting.

McIlroy bounced back with three birdies in four holes from the 13th, but three-putted the 18th and was nine behind on the penultimate evening. An also-ran. But from these forlorn positions, McIlroy invariably comes rattling through and so he birdied four in a row from second to create a “he couldn't, could he?” murmur.

“No,” was the emphatic answer. McIlroy unfathomably played the remainder of his round in two-over, missing five putts under 15 feet, and departed Oklahoma with a what-could-have-been angst that must have been awfully familiar. But for that maniacal 90 minutes... if only he had played that final 13 holes on Sunday in one-under…

McIlroy declined to speak to reporters for the second time in as many days. Not good.

Meanwhile, Fitzpatrick has a monster putt for birdie, his attempt just missing. He stays at five-under.

Matt Fitzpatrick ready for final round challenges

Matt Fitzpatrick cannot wait to get on the first tee and get his final round under way at Southern Hills as he bids to become the first Englishman to win the US PGA Championship in over 100 years. The man from Sheffield says he is relishing the chance to win his first major after a third-round 67 saw him move into tied-second and into the today's final round.

The 27-year-old trails leader Mito Pereira by three shots and will partner the PGA Tour rookie from Chile from 7.35 this evening.

Fitzpatrick has recorded just one top-10 finish in his previous 27 major starts, a the 2016 US Masters, but has won seven times on the DP World Tour, most recently last year's Andalucia Masters at Valderrama.

And he says he is excited by the prospect of battling it out for the second major of the year.

"I'm just looking forward to it," the two-time Ryder Cup player said. "I've spoke about my major record at length with my coaches.

"I've always just said to them, 'I just want to give myself a chance', because I back myself at the end of the day. I feel like whenever I've had a chance in Europe, I've played very well.

"Even over here when I've had chances to win I've played well. I've not lost it. It's a chance to win and I'm looking forward to it more than anything."

Asked how he would spend his time ahead of a late start on Sunday, Fitzpatrick added: "I'm sharing a house with Thomas Pieters this week which has been fun. First time we've done that, so we've had a bit of a laugh this week.

"He'll probably put the basketball on, so I'll probably just sit and pretend to watch and be on my phone and do nothing."

As for Pereira, the Chilean says he'll be ready for whatever challenges come his way.

"Of course, I don't have any experience playing in the final pairing in a major, but I guess I worked for it my whole life basically," Pereira said.

Pereira birdied three of the final six holes of the third round for a one-under-par 69 and the three-shot lead.
