Trevor Lawrence has been the presumptive No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft since his freshman season at Clemson, and once the Jacksonville Jaguars locked up that selection, his NFL destination appeared clear.

Urban Meyer, the new head coach of the Jaguars, is all but confirming that Lawrence will indeed be the pick when his team goes on the clock next month.

“I’d have to say that’s the direction we’re going,” Meyer told Peter King of NBC Sports. “I’ll leave that up to the owner when we make that decision official. But I’m certainly not stepping out of line that that’s certainly the direction we’re headed.”

The chance to pick Lawrence likely contributed to Meyer’s decision to come of out of his retirement from coaching at the college level to take his first swing at a top coaching job in the pro ranks. After winning national titles at multiple programs, Meyer will try to do the same in the NFL, and it looks like Lawrence will be his choice to lead him there.
