Updated Big 12 softball standings heading into final week of the regular season

The Oklahoma State Cowgirls were nipping at the heels of the Oklahoma Sooners for much of the 2023 season. After being swept by Texas following Oklahoma’s sweep of the Longhorns, the Sooners created enough distance to clinch their 11th consecutive Big 12 championship.

The Sooners are 15-0 in Big 12 play as they prepare for their final weekend of the regular season, a road trip to Stillwater to take on the Oklahoma State Cowgirls. Oklahoma State’s playing for seeding this weekend and hoping to overtake the Longhorns, who will face Baylor.

Neither Texas nor Oklahoma State want to see Oklahoma in the semifinals of the Big 12 championships. They’d like to put that matchup off for as long as possible.

Here’s a look at the Big 12 standings ahead of the final week of the regular season.

Oklahoma Sooners (Clinched Big 12 Championship)

Record: 45-1

Big 12: 15-0

vs. top 25: 16-0

Streak: W37

Last week

Picked up a pair of shutout, run-rule wins to open the series against the Kansas Jayhawks and then finished off the sweep with an 8-2 win on Sunday. Oklahoma clinched their 11th straight Big 12 championship with one week to go.

Up Next

The Sooners will travel up the Turnpike to face Tulsa in a game that was rescheduled from last week. Then they’ll head to Stillwater for what could be their last road trip to Oklahoma State for some time.

Texas Longhorns

Record: 39-9-1

Big 12: 11-4

vs. top 25: 5-5-1

Streak: W5

Last Week

Texas’ nonconference matchup with UTSA was canceled due to weather, so the Longhorns had the week off. After their sweep of Oklahoma State, they’ll have a chance to lock in the No. 2 seed in the Big 12 tournament with a series win over Baylor.

Oklahoma State Cowgirls

Last week

The Oklahoma State Cowgirls were able to get back to their winning ways on the road in Lubbock, taking two of three from Texas Tech. The loss was an extra-inning 4-3 loss on Saturday. How did the Cowgirls respond? An 8-0 run-rule win on Sunday.

Oklahoma State will travel to Denton to face UNT before hosting the Oklahoma Sooners in Stillwater starting Friday.

Baylor Bears

Record: 36-15

Big 12: 5-10

vs. top 25: 4-7

Last week

Baylor beat Texas State in the midweek, but more notably, they lost the series to last-place Iowa State up in Ames. Baylor dropped the first game on Friday 4-2 before roaring back with a 15-3 win on Saturday.

The Bears dropped the rubber match on Sunday, giving up five runs in the fourth, and were shut out over the final three innings.

Up Next

Baylor makes the short trip down I-35 to face the Texas Longhorns. Depending on how the series goes, the Bears run the risk of falling to last place in the Big 12. They’re just one game ahead of Iowa State and Kansas in conference play.

 

Texas Tech Red Raiders

Record: 31-21

Big 12: 5-13

vs. top 25: 3-10

Streak: L1

Last week

Dropped the series at home to Oklahoma State but were able to pick up.one win in the series. Texas Tech’s offense has been hot and cold throughout the season. They only scored five runs in their series against the Cowgirls.

Tech’s regular season is over. They’ll watch and wait for the rest of the conference schedule to play out to see where they’ll be seeded in the Big 12 tournament.

Kansas Jayhawks

Record: 22-24

Big 12: 4-11

vs. top 25: 2-13

Last week

The Jayhawks scored just two runs in their three-game series with the Oklahoma Sooners. The three losses dropped Kansas below .500 on the season.

They’ll have a shot to get back on the right track when they host the Iowa State Cyclones next weekend in their Big 12 finale. The Jayhawks are playing to avoid Oklahoma State in the first round of the Big 12 championships.

Iowa State Cyclones

Record: 21-28

Iowa State took the lead in the rubber match, but Baylor tied it up in their next at bat in the top of the third. In the top of the fourth, the Bears took a commanding 5-1 lead, but the Cyclones didn’t let that last long, putting up a five-spot in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-5 lead. Cyclones pitcher Ellie Spelhaug pitched 3.1

Iowa State travels to Lawrence to take on the Kansas Jayhawks in a series that will have a significant impact on the seeding in the Big 12 championship.
