UNM volleyball goes 2-1 in season-opening tournament
Aug. 26—IRVINE, Calif. — New Mexico had momentum going into the back stretch but ultimately fell to San Francisco in four sets (20-25, 15-25, 25-18, 19-25) on Saturday to finish 2-1 at the adidas/UCI Invitational.
In the fourth game against the Dons neither team led by more than three until San Francisco ripped off a 6-2 run to close.
On Friday, the Lobos limited Seton Hall to an .083 attack percentage in their 25-15, 27-25, 25-13 win before prevailing in a five-set battle against host UC Irvine later in the day. The Anteaters and Lobos went back-and-forth with UNM taking control late in a decisive fifth set (24-26, 25-20, 23-25, 25-20,15-12).
Uxue Guereca, Kaitlynn Biassou and Athina Dimitriadis led New Mexico in kills throughout the tournament, while Melissa Walden generated at least 30 assists in all three matchies in Irvine.
The Lobos return to Albuquerque to play host to St. John's, Utah Tech and Cal State Bakersfield at the Lobo Invitational at The Pit Aug. 31-Sep. 2.
