United States falls short against Mexico in spirited Gold Cup final

Unlike the women, the United States Men's National Team found itself on the wrong end of a shutout loss Sunday.

Well, one out of two isn't bad.

The United States National Teams achieved half of their desired results Sunday. After watching the United States Women defeat the Netherlands 2-0 in the World Cup final, it was the men's turn Sunday night against Mexico in the Gold Cup final, which crowns the continental champions of North America, Central America and the Caribbean.

Unlike the women, the men found themselves on the wrong end of a shutout loss, falling 1-0 to their longtime rivals to the south.

For much of the match, the Americans appeared to have the advantage, as they created numerous scoring chances. But the Americans eventually proved unable to put the ball in the back of the net.

Christian Pulisic and Jozy Altidore each had tremendous opportunities within the opening eight minutes, but neither was able to score.

The game was scoreless at halftime, but less than six minutes into the second half, the Americans nearly scored on a header off a corner kick. However, Mexico's Andres Guardado was in perfect position to head it back off the line.

Mexico seemed to generate momentum off that sequence, which culminated 22 minutes later with the only goal of the contest. In the 73rd minute, Jonathan dos Santos received a back heel from Raul Jimenez before deftly tucking the ball into the top left corner, grazing the crossbar as it crossed the goal line and into the back of the net.

The United States created one more threatening chance in the final minutes, but Mexico goaltender Guillermo Ochoa was there to come up with the clutch save.
