UNC football falls four spots in latest College Football Playoff rankings

North Carolina’s stunning loss to Georgia Tech moved the Tar Heels down in both the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll and Associated Press Top 25 poll on Sunday. And now, a few days later it has had an impact on their place in the College Football Playoff rankings.

The Tar Heels fell four spots from No. 13 to No. 17 in the updated rankings following that loss. The poll was released on Tuesday, pushing UNC down behind fellow ACC teams Clemson (No. 8) and Florida State (No. 16).

Any slim chance the Tar Heels had of climbing closer and closer to that top 4 are essentially gone. They needed chaos to even have a slim shot and now, they are essentially playing to climb as high as they can with NC State looming and then Clemson in the ACC Championship Game.

What is still in the picture is a chance at a New Year’s Six game and there’s a few ways UNC can get there. They can do so by beating NC State and Clemson or they can hope that Clemson gets into the playoff and UNC beats NC State and somehow plays very close to Clemson. The easiest way is to simply win out.
