UNC commit Drake Powell set to climb recruiting rankings

The rise of North Carolina 2024 commit Drake Powell continues.

After committing to the Tar Heels in 2022, Powell has elevated his game and the result has been a move up in the recruiting rankings as well as earning a fifth star from 247Sports.

With 247Sports set to release updated recruiting rankings for the 2024 class, writer Adam Finkelstein noted Powell would be a riser in the new update when it’s released. And that’s great news for UNC fans:

Drake Powell made an early commitment to his hometown school, North Carolina, in just September of his junior year after visiting them officially.

At the time, he was ranked No. 58 in the national class of 2024. He made a notable jump during the high school season, rising all the way up to No. 19, and may not be done yet.

While Powell’s scoring has been inconsistent at times this spring (he’s averaging 12.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.7 assists on 44% shooting from the floor, 18% from three, and 79% from the free-throw line), there’s so much to like about what he brings to the table. He’s athletic and competitive, a two-way player, and still improving at a rapid rate. The shooting obviously needs to keep coming, but there’s nothing glaring mechanically that should keep it from doing so. Those other markers typically translate long-term and so there is a lot of optimism that his best basketball is still, very much, in front of him.

Powell continues to earn praise for his play, and with UNC having a big 2024 class, he makes it even better.

The 6-foot-5, 170-pound forward is ranked No. 19 nationally, the No. 7 small forward and No. 3 player in the state of North Carolina per the 247Sports recruiting rankings.

How far will he rise? Can he crack the top 15?
