UConn women move up to No. 6 in AP poll; KK Arnold is Big East freshman of the week
The UConn women rebounded a bit in the AP national poll, moving from eighth to sixth in the Top 25 released Monday.
The Huskies began the season at No. 2, but dropped to No. 8 after losing at NC State, unranked at the time, on Nov. 12. UConn bounced back with resounding win over Maryland, which was in the rankings, and the win at Minnesota on Sunday.
South Carolina is No. 1, followed by UCLA, which will be UConn’s opponent in the Cayman Islands Classic on Friday, then Colorado, Stanford Iowa and UConn.
Two other upcoming Huskies opponents, Texas (No. 12) and North Carolina (No. 18) are in the rankings.
KK Arnold, UConn’s high-energy guard, was named the Big East’s freshman of the week.
Arnold had 18 points, five rebounds, six assists and six steals in the Huskies’ two victories last week. That makes two in a row for the Huskies’ freshman class; Qadence Samuels won it the first week of the season.
Arnold was the conference’s preseason freshman of the year.
Paige Bueckers was named to the Big East’s honor roll, after scoring 36 points, with 13 rebounds and six steals in the two games. Villanova’s Lucy Olsen was player of the week.
