The University of Connecticut's basketball and hockey programs will not play in the XL Center until at least the fall of 2021, according to the Hartford Courant.
“Our teams love competing in downtown Hartford," UConn athletic director David Benedict said, "but the conditions brought about by COVID-19 have made that impractical... We look forward to playing at the XL Center during the 2021-22 season.”
Benedict added that the men’s hockey will play in the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum - their practice facility, as well as the home of the women's hockey program, this season. Both the men's and women's basketball teams will play at the Gampel Pavilion full-time for the season.
“Because of the uncertainty, it didn’t make much economic sense for either of us,” said Mike Freimuth, executive director of the Capital Region Development Authority. “We’ve got to have the building pretty full for it to work. We talked it through.”
UConn will get in touch season-ticket holders regarding the XL games, according to the Courant, while classes at the school are online only until at least Nov. 19
