UCF freshman linebacker Demetreius Mayes Jr. has been charged with sexual battery after an alleged sexual encounter with a woman over the weekend.

The woman met Mayes at a party on Saturday. She told police that she later woke up naked to find herself engaged in sexual activity with Mayes. He was arrested Tuesday and police said that he was charged with sexual battery to a physically helpless person because the woman wasn’t able to tell Mayes that she didn’t want to have sex.

From the Orlando Sentinel:

Mayes told police he met the victim at a party off campus and took the victim back to his UCF apartment, according to the affidavit. He said the victim consented to sex.

When Mayes penetrated the victim, he said the victim said, “I can’t do this.” Mayes told police he stopped and let the victim get dressed before unlocking his bedroom door.

Mayes’ teammates said they saw him taking the victim to his room and tried to stop him from making “a big mistake,” according to the arrest report. They banged on Mayes’ door for several minutes, then said the victim exited while crying.

Central Florida was off on Saturday because the Knights’ game with North Carolina was canceled due to Hurricane Florence.

UCF coach Josh Heupel announced that Mayes has been suspended from all team activities in the wake of his arrest. UCF police issued a statement about Mayes’ arrest Wednesday.

“The UCF Police Department is committed to a thorough, professional investigation of all criminal incidents reported to us, and we’re dedicated to a culture of care that starts by believing the brave survivors who seek our assistance,” police chief Carl Metzger said. “This survivor’s well-being will continue to be a priority for our department and our university.”

Mayes was a three-star recruit in the class of 2018 and is a native of Miami.
