Aston Villa will pay an extra £250,000 to Bournemouth after Tyrone Mings made his England debut.

Villa agreed a £21 million deal to sign Mings in July and inserted a clause which triggers further instalments if the defender was to ever play at international level.

Mings impressed on his debut in England's 6-0 thrashing of Bulgaria on Monday night, producing an admirable response against a backdrop of racist chanting from a section of the home support.

It is understood Villa will pay £250,000 for each of his first four England appearances, taking the total amount up to £1 million on top of the £21 million fee. The total deal could eventually come to £26 million on appearances at club level, which will be a transfer record for Villa.

However, the deal still represents outstanding value for the Midlands club with the initial £21 million price a quarter of the fee paid by Manchester United for Harry Maguire.

Earlier this season, Villa head coach Dean Smith insisted the deal struck with Bournemouth was excellent business.

"You look at the market and as it went on it doesn't look a bad deal now, even though at the time you're thinking we are getting pushed here," he said.

"I don't think we're blessed with too many left-footed centre-backs in the country. He catches the eye with the way he plays. He's very good on the ball, he's athletic, he's good in the air. I think he's a tremendous talent.

"I know when I brought him in people may have been looking at him as a left-back but for me he's a natural centre-back - and he feels it's his best position as well."

Mings is due to return for training at Villa on Wednesday ahead of the Premier League game against Brighton this weekend.
