Tyler Shuey, Mason Semmel help Hamburg hold off Warrior Run in football
Sep. 2—Tyler Shuey threw for 305 yards and three touchdowns as well as ran for 92 yards and another score to lead Hamburg to a 34-27 victory over Warrior Run in a non-league football game Friday at Turbotville.
Mason Semmel, a senior, had four catches for 157 yards and three TDs for the Hawks (2-0).
Shuey, a junior, put up big numbers for the second straight week, completing 15-of-35 passes and also running the ball 20 times. He did throw an interception.
Last week in a 49-19 win over Halifax, he threw for 354 yards and four touchdowns and ran for 72 yards and two TDs.
Hamburg took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 16-yard pass from Shuey to Semmel. The Hawks made it 14-0 with 10:41 left in the first half on a 1-yard run by Madden Brandstatter.
Warrior Run (0-2), which lost 75-21 to Hamburg last season, cut it to 14-7 with 58 seconds left in the first half on a 38-yard reception by Sam Hall.
Hamburg went up 20-7 on a 51-yard pass from Shuey to Semmel (a two-point conversion run by Shuey failed), but Warrior Run answered immediately with an 82-yard kickoff return for a TD by Carter Marr to get within 20-14.
The Defenders then scored on a 2-yard TD catch by Hall and had a chance to take the lead, but the Hawks blocked the PAT.
Hamburg went back ahead on a 62-yard pass from Shuey to Semmell, then made it 34-20 on a 3-yard run by Shuey with 10:18 left.
Marr then scored on a 59-yard reception on the first play from scrimmage following the kickoff to make it 34-27.
Hamburg got an interception from Daniel Brady to end one Warrior Run drive, then forced the Defenders to turn it over on downs inside the Hawks' 10 with 2:38 left.
