Turner falls double short of cycle as Nats rout Marlins, 10-3
Trea Turner, who was benched earlier this week for not running out a bunt, homered to left in the fourth and hit a tiebreaking, two-run triple to right in the seventh, leading the Washington Nationals to a 10-3 win over the host Miami Marlins on Thursday night.
Turner finished 3-for-6 with three RBIs, falling a double short of the cycle.
The Nationals, who bashed nine extra-base hits, started the game without two starters on their infield. Third baseman Anthony Rendon, awaiting the birth of his first child, was put on paternity leave. Second baseman Daniel Murphy did not start due to a sore knee, although he doubled as a pinch hitter in the eighth.
In addition, three-time All-Star Stephen Strasburg, who is 7-0 with a 1.13 ERA in his past seven starts against Miami, was scratched from his scheduled start due to a pinched nerve in his neck and placed on the disabled list.
Tommy Milone replaced Strasburg for Thursday's start and earned a no-decision, allowing eight hits, no walks and three runs in five innings, striking out six.
Miami's Dan Straily also got a no-decision, allowing five hits, three walks and three runs in 5 2/3 innings, striking out six.
Reliever Justin Miller (6-1) earned the win. Adam Conley (3-2) took the loss after allowing three runs while getting just one out in the seventh.
The Marlins opened the scoring with three runs in the first. Miami's first three batters stroked hits -- singles by Starlin Castro and Brian Anderson and J.T. Realmuto's RBI double. Miami capped the inning with Justin Bour's sacrifice fly and Cameron Maybin's RBI single.
Washington cut its deficit to 3-2 in the fourth. Turner hit his 13th homer of the season, pulling a 2-0 fastball to left-center. Two outs later, rookie Juan Soto hit his 12th homer, pulling a high, 1-1 fastball to right, achieving 110 mph in exit velocity.
The Nationals tied the score 3-3 in the sixth. Adam Eaton drew a leadoff walk on just four pitches and scored when Ryan Zimmerman doubled high off the wall in left-center.
Washington took a 6-3 lead with three runs in the seventh as Bryce Harper's RBI double followed Turner's two-run triple, and the rout was on when the Nationals scored four runs in the ninth.
