Trump revels in 'lock her up' chant aimed at Michigan Gov. Whitmer just days after foiled kidnap plot

Trump supporters chanted “Lock her up!” Saturday when the president ranted about Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer at a rally just 10 days after white supremacists were busted for a kidnapping plot targeting her.

At a rally in Muskegon, Michigan, President Donald Trump grinned as the #MAGA throng ate up his denunciations of Whitmer over the restrictions she imposed to limit the spread of coronavirus in the hard-hit state.

“You gotta get your governor to open up your state,” Trump told thousands of cheering backers.

That’s when the crowd started chanting, “Lock her up!”

The president made no effort to hide his support for the cheers, which mirror the plot by a gang of far right-wing radicals to kidnap Whitmer.

“Lock ’em all up,” Trump responded to the crowd.

The “lock her up” chant was a staple of Trump rallies in his successful 2016 campaign against Hillary Clinton.

The FBI and the Department of Justice announced Oct. 8 that they broke up a plot hatched by a ring of 14 far right-wing activists to kidnap or assassinate Whitmer.

Trump has feuded with Whitmer for months and declined to offer his support to her after the plot was broken up.

The governor, who was on Biden’s vice presidential short list, irked the far right with her early embrace of strict rules to limit the spread of the pandemic, which has killed more than 7,300 Michiganders.

Armed protesters gathered outside the Michigan Capitol building in May to oppose Whitmer’s stay-at-home order. The Michigan secretary of state on Friday barred openly carrying guns within 100 feet of polling places on Election Day.
