We tried a bizarre, 100-year-old recipe for 'Hoover Stew,' which is is full of macaroni and sliced hot dogs

This “Hoover Stew” recipe is almost a century old.

But is there any way it holds up in the modern day? Thanks to TikTok, home chefs are trying to answer that question.

What is inflation and what causes it?

Hoover Stew, like the now-infamous water pie, dates back to the Great Depression, when supplies were limited and flavor came at a premium. The solution? A “stew” made of macaroni noodles, tomatoes and sliced hot dogs.

The dish has resurfaced in 2022, thanks to TikToker B. Dylan Hollis (@bdylanhollis), who’s famous for recreating old recipes in his kitchen.

Hollis had mixed feelings about the stew, which is why we decided to try it ourselves.

How to make ‘Hoover Stew’

The ingredients list for this recipe is simple:

  • 1 pound of sliced hot dogs

  • 1 pound of elbow macaroni

  • 2 cans of stewed tomatoes

  • 1 can of corn

Start by dumping your macaroni into a large pot of boiling water. While it cooks, heat the stewed tomatoes in another large pot. After a few minutes, add the corn and then the hot dogs, letting everything simmer for 15 minutes or so.

Finally, drain the cooked pasta and add it to the other ingredients. There are no spices, salt or pepper in this recipe, because those ingredients were often not available or were unpopular among home chefs.

Digging into this thing, you instantly note the absence of seasoning. This stuff is majorly bland. It almost tastes like less than the sum of its ingredients, which is pretty much the opposite of what you want out of a stew.

But, we will say, there is a lot of it to go around. The recipe makes a seemingly unlimited supply of Hoover Stew, which, even today, makes it pretty economical. That said, we will not be making this one again.
