How would Trey Lance and the 49ers fare with the rookie starting at QB?

Scott P. and Scott Barrett discuss what the 49ers offense would look like with Trey Lance starting at QB and what kind of numbers the rookie could put up.

SCOTT BARRETT: Lance to me reminds me a lot of sophomore year Patrick Mahomes where Alex Smith smashed, and then they jettison him and Mahomes is our guy. Lots of hype coming out in the offseason. And this is an amazing offense to be in. Over the past three seasons, Jimmy Garoppolo ranks behind only Watson and Mahomes in yards per pass attempt. Nick Mullens ranks ahead of Russell Wilson.

You have Brandon Aiyuk, one of the greatest yards-after-the-catch receivers in college football history. Deebo Samuel leads all wide receivers since entering the league. George Kittle leads all tight ends since entering the league. So you have this situation where Lance is so well set up, I could see him averaging like a 7.8 yards-per-attempt average on like a 4.38 ADOT. You just have these monsters who can create so much yards on their own, it doesn't really ask him to do a lot.

And then factor in Lance also has that Konami code upside. He averaged 77 rushing yards per game, 13.3 rushing fantasy points per game throughout his college career. That ranks in recent seasons behind only Lamar and Jalen Hurts. It ranks above Kyler Murray. It ranks above Dak Prescott. And so that's just all super exciting. Perfect, perfect landing spot.

And, like I said, OK, Kansas City jettisoned Alex Smith after a monster season. I mean, look at what San Francisco gave to acquire this guy. And he has his quarterback coach saying, despite not playing last year, this is the most year one, week one NFL-ready quarterback in his class. And just a lot of upside there, a lot of excitement. By the way, they have the overall second softest fantasy quarterback schedule, the softest playoff schedule. There's just-- you can make a compelling case.
