Trent Williams to the Vikings? New report says team confident it has chance at deal

The first round of the NFL Draft came and went with Trent Williams still a member of the Washington Redskins, but according to one report, there is a chance he could be heading to Minnesota.

ESPN's Courtney Cronin tweeted that the Vikings believe they are very much in contention to land Williams despite an earlier deal not going through before the first round.

Cronin points out that with 12 picks, the Vikings have a lot of draft capital to leverage with Washington. But the question remains on if Williams' salary demands can be met in a deal with Minnesota and what deal Washington will agree to.

When speaking to reporters on Thursday night, Redskins VP of Player Personnel Kyle Smith said the team was just as eager as fans are to get a deal done.

"We're working through it right now," he said.

When asked if it was possible if something happened imminently, he didn't have a solid answer.

"We're making calls, we're fielding calls and we'll go from there," he said.

Before Thursday's first round of the draft, Williams was tied to possible deals with the Browns and a number of other teams looking to fill holes on their offensive line. But no deal came through, leaving Washington still stuck in a saga that began before last season when Williams didn't show up for the team's minicamp. He later revealed that the team had mishandled a cancerous tumor on his head.

Speaking on NBC Sports Washington's "On the Clock" broadcast on Thursday night, NBC Sports Washington Redskins Insider JP Finlay reiterated the need for both sides to be able to move on.

"The ball is rolling, but some more steps need to be taken," Finlay said. "The work here isn't done. It's about getting the Trent Williams deal done, moving on from that saga, pushing that out of the Redskins' life and allowing them to move forward into a new direction."
