Trent Williams traded to San Francisco 49ers for draft picks, ending long saga with Redskins

The Redskins agreed to trade left tackle Trent Williams to the San Francisco 49ers for a third and fifth-round pick.

The third-round pick will be in the 2021 Draft.

The trade ends a holdout/medical saga that dragged on more than a full calendar year and reunites Williams with former Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. When the Redskins drafted Williams back in 2010, Kyle's father Mike was the head coach.

Williams did not play a single snap in Washington in the 2019 season and missed all of the team's offseason activities. His hold-out was partly due to a cancerous growth on his scalp that he felt the Redskins medical team did not provide proper treatment. It was also due to distrust with former team president Bruce Allen.

While Ron Rivera's arrival in January cleared up the medical issues and the Bruce Allen issue, one big problem remained: money.

Williams wanted a new deal loaded with guaranteed money and by more than one report his relationship with the Redskins organization soured.

Things got worse after Rivera gave Vincent Taylor, Williams' agent, permission to negotiate with other teams toward a trade in early March. After a few weeks and no trade offers, Taylor put out a statement questioning if Washington was negotiating in good faith towards a deal.

The compensation won't thrill Redskins fans but in the end, this allows Williams and the organization to move forward. And for as good as Williams has been, he turns 32 in July and hasn't played a full 16-game season since 2013.

The Redskins selected Williams with the fourth overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. He started 119 games in Washington and made seven straight Pro Bowls from 2012 through 2019.

It's been widely reported that Washington wouldn't work with the 49ers about a possible Kirk Cousins trade a few years back because of the way the relationship ended between the Shanahans and the Redskins. Clearly that's changed now with Bruce Allen out and Ron Rivera running the ship.

Former Redskins offensive line coach Chris Foerster is also on the Niners staff. He was Williams' first O-line coach in the NFL from 2010 to 2014.
