Sanheim misses Flyers' game vs. Capitals because of COVID protocol originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia

Travis Sanheim did not play in the Flyers' 7-4 win Sunday over the Capitals because he was on the NHL's COVID protocol list.

Sanheim, who practiced Saturday, is the second Flyers player to be placed on the COVID protocol list this season. Shayne Gostisbehere missed the Flyers' first six games after he had tested positive for COVID-19.

There are a number of contributing factors for why a player can be placed on the COVID protocol list. A player being out because of COVID protocol does not necessarily mean the player tested positive for the coronavirus.

Here is a statement from the NHL regarding Sunday's Flyers-Capitals game being played as scheduled:

"As a result of a Philadelphia Flyers player entering the league’s COVID protocol earlier today, a decision was made by the NHL’s and NHLPA’s medical experts to have all Flyers players, coaches and staff receive POC tests in advance of this afternoon’s game vs. the Washington Capitals. After all tests returned negative, the league’s, NHLPA’s and clubs’ medical groups determined that it was appropriate to play the game."

With multiple teams dealing with postponements because of the coronavirus pandemic, the NHL on Saturday announced numerous rescheduled games. Four of the Flyers' games were impacted.

The Flyers were already scheduled to stay in Washington, D.C., and practice Monday at Capital One Arena before Tuesday's game against the Capitals (6 p.m. ET/NBCSP). We'll have to wait and see if there will be any changes to the upcoming practice or game schedule.
