Travis Kelce talks Chiefs’ comeback win vs. Browns, new Tide partnership

Kansas City Chiefs All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce continues to be one of the most exciting players in the NFL, helping to lead his team to back-to-back Super Bowl appearances. On Sunday, the six-time Pro Bowler was a vital part of the Chiefs season-opening victory over the Cleveland Browns.

Kelce and the NFL are encouraging cold washing as part of Tide’s #TurnToCold campaign to tackle stains and handle whatever is in your laundry basket. By joining the campaign switching to cold washing, you could save up to 90% energy per load. Cold washing can save up to $150.00 a year on your energy bill. That’s a new player jersey every season!

Chiefs Wire’s Ed Easton Jr. recently sat down with Kelce to talk about his work with Tide, the Chiefs’ comeback win vs. Cleveland and more.

Chiefs Wire: What sparked your interest in working with Tide on the #TurnToCold campaign?

“Really, their mission is to try and make this planet a better place by saving energy. I know I teamed up with them and tide and the NFL both to get everyone to encourage everyone to turn to cold. And what that's going to do is stop using hot water, saves your energy bill. And in turn to cold. One of the fun things I'm doing is I'm actually going to be the voice of the washer machine. That's right; everybody gets a chance to win a tide washing machine; go to tide.com and pledge to turn to cold, and you enter for a chance to win one. And you'll hear me encourage you and hype you up every single time you turn to cold."

Chiefs Wire: How would you rate your laundry skills?

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

“Um, yeah, man, I got pretty decent laundry skills. I would say, you know, I might not be the most experienced I might have to, you know, read some tags. Look up some stuff online, but for the most part, I got it handled.”

Chiefs Wire: What was the mood in the huddle after Cleveland pushed the lead to nine points in the fourth quarter?

AP Photo/Charlie Riedel

"Well, it was the first play of the drive, so I was mentally trying to get prepared to sustain a big drive. One of the biggest drives in the game, knowing we were down by two scores. We typically, when we're down by two scores, go into a certain mode to kind of pick up the tempo. And sure enough, the first play we hit for a big score. And what it does is it just puts you at ease. And it gives you confidence that we can just put a touchdown up on the board that fast. I know a lot of offensive linemen were like, oh man, that was easy. You know, they haven't experienced that Tyreek Hill that Patrick Mahomes to Tyreek Hill, bomb. That connection where it just everything happened so quick and we're back on the sidelines, hoping the defense would give us that ball back. It was just fun. It was fun in there every single time that I get a chance to go out there on that field, man. You just have to go out there with the guys next to you with the right mentality, and we're fortunate enough we got a lot of good leaders in this locker room to go out there and do that like we did.”

Chiefs Wire: How would you describe the chemistry between you and Patrick Mahomes over the last few seasons?

AP Photo/Reed Hoffmann

“I think it's just it keeps growing on the field in terms of chemistry, and it's not just me; it's this entire offense. It starts with Coach Reid being able to be a great teacher of the game but a great teacher in terms of play-calling so that we all understand the intentions of the play-caller, and from there, it's just going out there and making sure I'm in the right place at the right time for Pat, or you know making sure that I'm making that extra blocker doing the right things to get somebody else open and just be an ultimate team player out there. And I think I think it's growing as well as chemistry in this offense and everybody's chemistry in this offense.” https://twitter.com/Chiefs/status/1437190870571393026

Chiefs Wire: How did it feel to have a packed Arrowhead Stadium again for a regular-season game?

AP Photo/Charlie Riedel

“Man, it was special. It was special. I'll remember that game like it was the first time I had ever experienced 70,000 people ever. It was just like I said Arrowhead is an unbelievable place. Last year, not having a lot of fans in the stadium or even you know when the times that we did have fans in the stadium, it just wasn't the same energy. We realized that immediately when we got to the stadium this past Sunday because Arrowhead was shaking, and you could barely hear the person next year when it really was rockin'.”

Chiefs Wire: As you continue to rise up the Chiefs' franchise record books. Do you ever think about potentially passing Tony Gonzalez?

Jay Biggerstaff-USA TODAY Sports

“I try not to think about that. I'm still trying to fill Tony Gonzalez's shoes here in Kansas City, man. With that guy, he was for this community and how he went about his work as a professional. I'm still chasing it. I'm still chasing it and try not to think about it because I know I'm still a long way away from getting anywhere close to him. He played the game the right way for so many years. And it's just, it's an honor to be in the same sentence or even the same conversation as him, but I admire him so much. I don't know if I'll ever be or if I'll ever catch him in the stat book, but for sure.” For more information on how you can submit information for the exciting campaign, check out tide.com.
