Travis Kelce doesn’t expect Chiefs to spend much time in Germany before Dolphins game

Some NFL players may dread games in international markets, but tight end Travis Kelce is a big fan of playing abroad.

I love them, man,” Kelce said in the latest “New Heights” podcast. “I love them. Anything that changes the scene. I like playing in away stadiums just because I like getting out of Kansas City. Because during the season, you just don’t get free time to be able to go see another city or another like arena outside of game day. So I like the away games, and this one’s gonna be a blast.”

Kelce was talking about the Chiefs’ game against the Miami Dolphins in Frankfurt, Germany on Nov. 5. He’s already talked with new Chiefs backup quarterback Blaine Gabbert about playing in that country.

Gabbert was with the Buccaneers last season when they took on the Seahawks in the first NFL regular-season game in Germany.

“He played in Germany last year and he said it was awesome,” Kelce said. “He said the fans were amazing. They were rowdy.”

Kelce was asked if he had any plans while in Germany, and he hopes to do a “chug off” competition.

“I think that’d be sweet to really get the fan engagement going,” he said of a beer-drinking competition.

Kelce’s brother, Jason, the podcast’s co-host, asked if Travis would participate in the “event.”

“I don’t think I should drink before the game,” Kelce said. “But we’ll see.”

Jason then asked if the Chiefs would spend much time in Germany ahead of the game. Last year the Seahawks arrived three days before kickoff in Munich. The Buccaneers got their two days early.

Kelce expects the Chiefs to have little downtime in Germany.

“I don’t think we’re going out early,” Kelce said. “I think we’ll just probably get Friday night (off). We’ll probably leave Thursday night, get in Friday morning. Have a good Friday practice. And then yeah, then maybe get just like an afternoon off.”

The Chiefs’ bye week is after the Dolphins game, and Kelce said he might stay behind in Germany. The brothers then talked about recording a podcast episode in Germany, so maybe that will come to fruition.
