The news broke Friday evening just hours after free agency tipped off that the Trail Blazers have landed free agent forward Derrick Jones Jr.
Jones Jr. has spent the past three seasons in Miami averaging 7.3 points and 3.8 rebounds.
His excellent athleticism and major hops make him an entertaining dunker and overall fun player to watch. His length and effort on the defensive end make him a great pick up for the Blazers.
The 23-year-old wing has reportedly agreed to a two-year, $19 million deal with Portland.
Fans and analysts have been weighing in on the move:
That’s more of a reflection of the Heat’s wing depth, than Jones. Given the context of the Blazers wing issues (especially defensively), Jones was a great choice given their limited financial resources. https://t.co/moMtoRZHj4

#Blazers second unit has been upgraded in a big way. Projected bench: Simons, Trent, Hood, Jones Jr and Kanter. Portland became legit contenders for top 4 in the west today.

A little confused as to why people are upset with the Derrick Jones Jr signing
Here are the things he is elite at for his position, that the Blazers needed badly.
Finishing at the rim
Protecting the rim
Defending multiple positions

They’re mad about Derrick Jones Jr. because he’s not a great 3-pt shooter. They thought we actually had a chance at Ibaka.

Idk bout Derrick Jones jr but if Melo comes back the blazers look like they’ll be back in their rightful 3rd seed this season
