Blazers use their platform 'to make the world and community a better place' originally appeared on NBC Sports Northwest
On the latest Talkin’ Blazers Podcast with host Channing Frye and Dan Sheldon, Trail Blazers President and CEO Chris McGowan joined the podcast to talk voting, the possibility of fans in the stands, and the return of NBA action.
McGowan, who was named President and Chief Executive Officer of the Trail Blazers in 2012, explained how the Blazers organization is working to promote people to get out and vote in hopes to make a positive impact.
“We view our organization has a platform,” McGowan explained. “The Trail Blazers are a big deal in our community and we take that responsibility pretty seriously.”
We want our platform to be used to make the world and community a better place. I think the line that we’ve drawn is really good…. For example, our voting initiative, it’s not a partisan voting initiative -- it’s just voting is important.

Earlier this month, the Trail Blazers made sure Rip City was equipped with voting information and various material to easily vote in this year’s election, which included a drive-thru “Rip City Votes Fan Kit Pickup” event on October 8 and 9.
The voting initiative is league-wide, as McGowan explained on the Talkin’ Blazers Podcast.
“So how can we use our platform to promote people to get out and vote? Fortunately, in Oregon we have really great voting statistics,” McGowan said. “But in other parts of the country there are some serious issues around voting. So collectively if NBA teams can all get together and promote and make it easier for people to vote… That’s a great way that the league can use the platform.”
Individually, the Trail Blazers players have been vocal and active on promoting a plan for people to vote.
Damian Lillard has teamed up with More Than A Vote, while CJ McCollum has used his platform to encourage all to vote.
McGowan expressed how the NBA has done a good job aligning itself with its players.
Our players are really active in this space as well. And it would be really weird if our players were really active and all the organizations are silent -- that just doesn’t work.
