Trae Young frustrated with new shooting rules: 'There's a lot of missed calls'

Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young is not pleased with the NBA's new shooting rule. Young discussed the issue following the team's 122-111 loss to the Washington Wizards on Thursday, calling the change "frustrating."

Young prefaced his comments by saying he did not want to be fined by the league. Young then said a lot of calls were being missed due to the rule change, according to ESPN.

"There's a lot of missed calls," he said. "It's basketball. It's just, it feels that they're learning, and they're just — I don't know. It's frustrating."

The NBA introduced a new rule in the offseason designed to prevent players from drawing fouls while making non-basketball moves. When the rule was announced, many believed the rule would have the biggest impact on players like James Harden and Young.

Young is averaging 24.2 points per game in 5 games, which is barely below his 25.3 points per game average from last season. Young, however, isn't getting his points the same way. His free-throw attempts have been cut in half, dropping from 8.7 to 4.2 per game.

Harden's struggles are more pronounced. He's averaging just 16.6 points per game after putting up 24.6 points per game last season, and his free-throw attempts have dropped to 2.8 per contest.

Others around NBA express support for new rule change

Others around the game don't agree with Young's assessment. Wizards forward Kyle Kuzma expressed support for the rule change, saying it was "the best thing the league has done in recent memory."

Kuzma's comment may be 100-percent sincere, but it also could be a dig at Young considering Kuzma tweeted that immediately after the teams played.

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr is also a fan of the rule change, saying the game has a "more authentic feel" this season.

Trae Young fined $15K for contact with official

The NBA fined Young $15,000 on Friday afternoon for making contact with an official during their loss to Washington on Thursday.

Young missed a contested baseline jumper in the second quarter of Thursday's game in Washington, and landed out of bounds while his missed shot was tipped in. As the Wizards went to pass the ball in to head the other way, Young bumped into official Ben Taylor as he started running down the court.

Though the contact wasn't much, and likely was an accident, Young was hit with a technical foul.
