Trade rumor rankings: Fred VanVleet, Kevin Durant and more

We’re a day away from the 2022-23 NBA trade deadline as we await to find out what the next domino to fall will be.

After the Kyrie Irving trade to the Dallas Mavericks, could the Brooklyn Nets be open to moving their other major superstar? Will the Toronto Raptors trade one of their star swingmen? Will we be taken by surprise by an unforeseen move?

Below, we rank the 10 players who have appeared most often in trade rumors over the previous 24 hours, as judged by appearances on our page. With so much action and so little time, let us get right into it.

Bones Hyland (Denver)

Kyle Ross-USA TODAY Sports

A natural scorer in a league in love with scoring, Bones Hyland has attracted a lot of interest since he was rumored to hit the trade block.

The Toronto Raptors, Minnesota Timberwolves and New Orleans Pelicans have reportedly registered interest in the second-year player, according to Michael Singer:

The Denver Post reported last week that the Nuggets were seeking a two-way rotation player and draft compensation, or a first-round pick for Hyland. Sources said the Nuggets felt they had traction on a first-round pick. The Nuggets (and other teams) could be waiting for other major dominoes to fall prior to Thursday’s deadline. Multiple league sources said Toronto, in addition to New Orleans and Minnesota, had registered some level of interest in Hyland.

Despite some potential awkwardness trading between Denver and Minnesota due to Tim Connelly switching jobs over the offseason, that reportedly wouldn’t be an issue, per The Athletic:

As for the reported notion that Nuggets ownership might not want to trade Hyland to Minnesota because of the history with Connelly, a Nuggets source insisted that it wouldn’t be an obstacle. And despite Hyland’s stated flaws, the fact remains that he’s a talented young player with two more affordable seasons left on his rookie deal ($2.3 million team option for next season; $4.1 million team option in the 2024-25 campaign) and restricted free agency thereafter.

Our own Michael Scotto also reported Hyland as being an attainable player ahead of the trade deadline.

Fred VanVleet (Toronto)

Petre Thomas-USA TODAY Sports

There has been some debate as to who the likeliest Toronto Raptors player to be traded might be. The most recent report on the matter indicates that might be star point guard Fred VanVleet, who has gotten attention from the Los Angeles Clippers, Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Lakers, Orlando Magic and Minnesota Timberwolves, per Jake Fischer:

Several opposing executives have since labeled Fred VanVleet as the most likely Raptor to be traded ahead of Thursday’s deadline. A pair of Western Conference contenders in the Los Angeles Clippers and the Phoenix Suns have been often mentioned as VanVleet suitors. The Lakers, Magic and Timberwolves have also registered interest in VanVleet, sources said. VanVleet is expected to decline his $22 million option for the 2023-24 season in search of a pay raise that approaches a maximum salary and certainly north of $30 million.

That report came a couple of days after the Action Network reported similarly:

With that in mind, multiple sources told Action Network there’s real interest from the Magic in Raptors point guard Fred VanVleet. Of all the Raptors’ assets, VanVleet is thought to be the most available — he’s seeking a new long-term deal and nearing 30 years old with a lot of miles on him.

We’ll see what happens here but keep an eye on VanVleet and the Raptors over the next day or so.

Matisse Thybulle (Philadelphia)

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

Despite little to no offensive impact, Matisse Thybulle has drawn a whole lot of interest on the trade market, according to our own Scotto:

Nearly a third of the league has expressed exploratory trade interest in trading for Sixers back-to-back All-Defensive player Matisse Thybulle at various points this season. The list includes the Hawks and Kings, per Marc Stein, and Warriors, according to Keith Pompey. Other teams who’ve called include the Pacers, Blazers, Bucks, Mavericks, Hornets, Raptors, and Suns, HoopsHype has learned.

There’s a belief out there that Wednesday night could be Thybulle’s final game with Philadelphia, too:

Could Wednesday’s contest against the Boston Celtics be Matisse Thybulle’s last game as a member of the 76ers? There’s a belief that the shooting guard will be moved before Thursday’s 3 p.m. trade deadline as the team positions itself to win this season’s NBA title. The Sixers (34-18), who are third in the Eastern Conference, could replace him with a suitable backup center to help push the squad to a deep postseason run.

Thybulle could be a savvy, cheap pickup for contending teams lacking in impactful defenders.

Jakob Poeltl (San Antonio)

Kamil Krzaczynski-USA TODAY Sports

San Antonio Spurs big man Jakob Poeltl has been a source of trade scuttle for years now, with this seeming like this season he could finally get traded.

The Raptors and Spurs have reportedly held talks over Poeltl involving Gary Trent Jr., according to Marc Stein:

Further complicating matters when trying to assess Toronto’s intentions: There were some fresh rumbles this week that it had explored packaging Trent and some level of draft compensation to San Antonio for Spurs center Jakob Poeltl. That’s a move you would make to try to move up the Eastern Conference ladder — not down. The Raptors, for the record, don’t seem to mind the confusion they’re generating.

Stein also mentioned the Washington Wizards as having an interest in Poeltl.

Meanwhile, according to The Athletic’s Jay King, the Boston Celtics, despite their interest in Poeltl, might be wiser saving their draft capital, especially considering San Antonio’s asking price for the talented two-way big:

The San Antonio Spurs like Poeltl. They could re-sign him after this season. They will want a significant return for him if they do give him up, according to league sources who were granted anonymity to speak freely. If the Celtics do use another first-round pick, it would hamstring their flexibility moving forward. They might want to avoid doing that just to acquire a backup center – even if Poeltl would be a premium backup in that role.

Cam Reddish (New York)

Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

Despite his complete lack of playing time recently, New York Knicks swingman Cam Reddish is still drawing interest from the championship-contending Milwaukee Bucks, according to Stein:

The Bucks have expressed trade interest in New York’s former MVP Derrick Rose, league sources say, but it’s difficult to see a pathway to Milwaukee absorbing Rose’s $14.5 million salary. The Bucks, of course, have been chasing a trade for Phoenix’s Jae Crowder for months and are also regarded as team with interest in the Knicks’ Cam Reddish as well, suggesting that the wing is Milwaukee’s priority.

There were also two recent reports out of New York City that Reddish’s camp is confident he’ll be traded by tomorrow.

Meanwhile, two teams to recently have expressed interest in Reddish are the Denver Nuggets and Detroit Pistons, according to Ian Begley.

OG Anunoby (Toronto)

Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports

With so much scuttle surrounding Toronto, OG Anunoby has been another player much-discussed as far as the possibility of getting traded.

One team interested in his services are the Memphis Grizzlies, who are reportedly willing to send two first-round picks in exchange for the two-way swingman.

According to Stein, two more teams interested in Anunoby are the New Orleans Pelicans and the Knicks, both of whom are reportedly willing to meet that asking price.

One general manager reportedly said the Raptors are willing to trade anyone on their roster, so expect fireworks out of Canada in the next day.

Kevin Durant (Brooklyn)

Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports

Following the Irving trade, Brian Windhorst reported that teams now are wondering if that will make the Nets more willing to trade Kevin Durant if the right offer comes along:

Now that Kyrie Irving has been traded, maybe the Nets’ position on not trading Kevin Durant as it really was kind of last summer may change. That is an interesting development that has happened over the last 48 hours since the Kyrie trade from people that I’ve talked to.

What’s more, if it seems we have hit a holding pattern in the trade market, that might be because teams are waiting to find out just that – if the Nets are willing to move the former league MVP:

One factor that had slowed trade talks as of late Tuesday night? Kevin Durant’s uncertain status with the Nets. Several teams said talks had been impacted by Durant because many teams are waiting to see if the All-Star will be available at the deadline. So teams are holding off on any big moves until they get clarity on Durant.

It seems unlikely, but a Durant trade at the deadline would make him the best player ever to get traded at the deadline. If you think we’re exaggerating, just look at our current ranking of best players shipped out at the deadline and tell us Durant wouldn’t top that list immediately.

Tim Hardaway Jr. (Dallas)

Rob Gray-USA TODAY Sports

Due to inconsistency and the money left on his contract, the Dallas Mavericks are reportedly shopping Tim Hardaway Jr., according to ESPN:

Some of that financial maneuvering could happen before Thursday’s trade deadline. The Mavs have been shopping shooting guard Tim Hardaway Jr., who is owed $34 million over the two remaining years on his contract, since last season, sources told ESPN. That is expected to continue leading up to the deadline, as second-year general manager Nico Harrison hopes to upgrade a 24th-ranked defense that took a significant hit with Finney-Smith’s departure.

Hardaway Jr. talked about the rumors, telling the media:

“I’m just trying to stay positive, stay in the moment as much as I can, do whatever I can to help the team that I’m on right now — and hopefully moving forward,” Hardaway told ESPN after Monday’s shootaround in Utah.

We’ll see if Dallas can find a new home for the outside-shooting specialist, but it seems unlikely unless the Mavericks use him as part of a larger deal or add sweetener to get a team to take on his contract.

Eric Gordon (Houston)

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

Could we finally be nearing an end to Eric Gordon’s time with the Houston Rockets?

Two teams reportedly interested in the veteran 2-guard are the Suns and Clippers, according to The Athletic:

This week, the list of teams with serious interest in acquiring the former Sixth Man of the Year has been whittled down to a handful of contenders — including the LA Clippers and Phoenix Suns — according to multiple league sources who were all granted anonymity in this piece to speak freely. Houston knows Gordon’s position on this matter. He’s made his preference for a trade known to management at different points starting as far back as last offseason, sources said — but has been professional and played his role throughout his time in a Rockets uniform.

Kelly Iko added in that report that the Sixers came close to landing Gordon during last year’s draft, so that’s another potential landing spot for the former Indiana standout.

If no trade comes for Gordon, Iko said a buyout of his contract is possible. If that is the case, Gordon will have a long list of suitors, as his skill set would fit perfectly with any contender.

Derrick Rose (New York)

Wendell Cruz-USA TODAY Sports

Despite not playing since late December, Derrick Rose is apparently still attracting interest in the trade market, as, according to Stein, the Milwaukee Bucks could be after the former league MVP:

The Bucks have expressed trade interest in New York’s former MVP Derrick Rose, league sources say, but it’s difficult to see a pathway to Milwaukee absorbing Rose’s $14.5 million salary. The Bucks, of course, have been chasing a trade for Phoenix’s Jae Crowder for months and are also regarded as team with interest in the Knicks’ Cam Reddish as well, suggesting that the wing is Milwaukee’s priority.

Rose is averaging 5.8 points this season, but there’s a chance he can provide some bench scoring and playmaking for a potentially interested team.
