Brandon Rivera being treated in same hospital as Egan Bernal after crash in Colombia

Ineos Grenadiers’s Brandon Rivera is recovering in the same Colombian hospital as teammate Egan Bernal after crashing in the same region just days after his compatriot.

Rivera, a 25 year-old who signed for Ineos in 2019, fractured his elbow, dislocated a shoulder and dislocated his AC joint after coming off his bike during a training ride.

The news comes as doctors at the Clínica Universidad de La Sabana in Bogota released an update on Bernal’s condition, saying the 2019 Tour de France champion’s recovery was going well albeit he remained in intensive care and would require further surgery.

Bernal fractured vertebrae, a fractured right femur, a fractured right kneecap, chest trauma, a punctured lung and fractured ribs when he collided with the back of a bus earlier this week.

"Egan continues with his rehabilitation plan,” read a statement from the clinic. “He has not shown signs of infection, he is also in good spirits and thanks to his improvement his vasopressor medication was withdrawn.

"In addition to communicating his good state of health, we inform that at this time the patient is in a regeneration or tertiary trauma period.

"Therefore, tomorrow he will have two surgeries, which are secondary procedures that are not life-threatening.

"The first is an osteosynthesis of a fracture to the second metacarpal of the right hand, which will be performed by the hand surgery team. The second is a maxillo-facial to manage dentoalveolar fractures in his mouth."

Bernal has been visited by family, with his mother posting a positive update on Instagram.

And his agent told Gazzetta Dello Sport that Bernal was in good spirits despite being in pain.

“He told me he was in a lot of pain,” Giuseppe Acquadro said. “I said I’d perhaps come to see him and he responded: ‘Perhaps I’ll come over to Europe!’

Ineos also released a picture of Bernal from his hospital bed giving his fans an 'A-okay' sign.

“He also asked me about Marco Pantani’s accident and I reminded him that a few years after his accident, Pantani won the Giro and the Tour.”

Tributes and well wishes have flooded in for Egan Bernal, the Colombian rider who remains in intensive care following a serious collision with a bus while on a training ride in his home country on Monday.

Bernal, 25, underwent multiple rounds of surgery following the accident, with doctors working to repair dislocated fractures in his spine as well as fractures to his right leg and kneecap. The two-time grand Tour winner also suffered a collapsed lung after reportedly colliding with a parked bus while riding at high speed close to his home in Bogotá.

Images circulating on social media showed the Ineos Grenadiers rider lying on the ground receiving treatment behind a heavily-dented vehicle.

A statement overnight from the Clinica Universidad de La Sabana in Bogotá made clear how serious the accident was when it said that surgeons had successfully "kept intact the neurological integrity and conserved the functionality of the segments involved".

The statement added: "We will wait for his progress over the next 72 hours in the Intensive Care Unit to see the response to the course of treatment established for this high-energy trauma.

"We have immediately begun the rehabilitation process to achieve the best possible results with our patient."

Ineos Grenadiers issued their own statement on Monday evening which did not give details of Bernal's injuries, but did say he had been conscious when transferred to hospital by the team's medical staff. "He is stable and undergoing further assessment," the statement read.

Bernal's team on Tuesday confirmed the extent of the injuries, saying: "Following yesterday’s training accident, Egan remains in a stable condition in intensive care after two successful surgeries.

"Egan suffered a fractured vertebrae, a fractured right femur, a fractured right patella, chest trauma, a punctured lung and several fractured ribs in the crash. Doctors were able to medically pin his right leg and stabilise the vertebrae fracture in two separate surgeries last night. He is now in an intensive care unit where other potential secondary injuries are being managed, as well as his body’s response to the trauma.

"The team would like to thank the medical staff at Clinica Universidad de La Sabana and everyone who has sent messages of support to Egan. All of our focus is on ensuring Egan is given the best possible care as he starts on his road to recovery."

While the majority of Ineos Grenadiers' squad trains in Europe, Bernal had remained in Colombia to prepare for the upcoming season, riding alongside a small group of team-mates that includes former Giro d'Italia champion Richard Carapaz.

Bernal, who won the 2019 Tour de France – becoming in the process the youngest winner of the yellow jersey in 110 years – took his second grand tour victory in last year's Giro. He signed a new five-year contract with Ineos Grenadiers earlier this month, and had set out his ambitions to target the Tour again this summer.

Several riders and teams were quick to post messages of support to Bernal on social media, including multiple world champion Peter Sagan and young Belgian Remco Evenepoel, with whom Bernal did battle at last year’s Giro.

Bernal's team-mate Tao Geoghegan Hart, the 2020 Giro winner, wrote: "We are all hoping you are ok @Eganbernal. So scary to read this news. A sad reminder how dangerous our training can be."

Four-time Tour winner and former team-mate Chris Froome also posted pictures of himself and Bernal, saying his thoughts were with the rider and his family.
