Blue Jays' Biggio finishes 5th in AL Rookie of the Year voting

Cavan Biggio and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. were among the lone bright spots for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2019 and the league certainly took notice.

Biggio, who was called up from Triple-A on May 24, finished fifth in American League Rookie of the Year voting. The 24-year-old slashed .364/.429/.793 with a .234 batting average, 16 home runs and 66 runs scored in 100 games. He also hit for the cycle on Sept. 17 against the Baltimore Orioles.

Guerrero Jr. entered the 2019 season as baseball’s unanimously highest-touted prospect and showed flashes of brilliance throughout his debut campaign. He finished with a slash-line of .339/.433/.772, finishing with a .272 batting average, 15 home runs and 72 runs scored in 123 games. He was also second in the Home Run Derby with a jaw-dropping 94 blasts, although he officially lost to New York Mets standout Pete Alonso — who captured NL Rookie of the Year honours.

It’s worth noting that Bo Bichette did not place in the top eight among voters. Bichette burst onto the scene for the Blue Jays, slashing .358/.571/.930 slash with a .311 batting average, 11 home runs and 32 runs in just 46 games.

Toronto will now look to build around its promising core for the foreseeable future.

Houston’s Yordan Alvarez won the AL Rookie of the Year Award in a unanimous decision.
