A tornado with a wind speed reaching about 95 mph touched down in Dane County during Saturday night's storms

A tornado with a wind speed of about 95 mph touched down in Dane County during Saturday night's storms, according to the National Weather Service.

"We have confirmed there was a tornado around southwest of Stoughton, around the Dunkirk area," Kevin Wagner, a meteorologist for the NWS in Sullivan said Sunday.

The EF 1 tornado, which lasted about four minutes, damaged homes, outbuildings, roofs and several trees, he said.

The tornado's nearly 5-mile path started south of Leslie Road and west of Veium Road shortly before 10 p.m., according to Wagner. Then it moved northeast and ended near Highway W and west of Highway A.

The tornado's wind speed was estimated between 70 and 80 mph in the southwest part of Stoughton. It reached approximately 95 mph southeast of Stoughton, in the Dunkirk area, Wagner said.

As of Sunday afternoon, a NWS survey team was still looking into reports of damage around the area, Wagner said.

Stoughton Utilities posted an update on Facebook around 11:45 a.m. Sunday that said it had one circuit fed from its West Substation that remained out of service "due to a line of poles that were blown over by the storm."

"We anticipate that this circuit will take several more hours to restore, and may be without power into the late afternoon," the company said in that update.

There were also some isolated outages caused by localized damages, the update said, including where trees had taken down individual customers' service wires.

"We are working to address all outages as quickly as possible," the update said. "We thank all of our customers for their patience during these outages. Our thoughts also go out to all of those who have experienced damage to their homes from the winds and fallen trees."

Southern and eastern Wisconsin are expected to see 2 to 4 inches of snow overnight Sunday into Monday, potentially affecting the morning commute.
