Top-Rated Trucks in the 2017 U.S. APEAL Study

Thanks to favorable economic conditions and inexpensive gas, Americans have rekindled their love affair with trucks.

To find out which makes and models please their owners the most, J.D. Power conducts the annual Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study. The study measures vehicle owner satisfaction with performance, design, layout, and features of the vehicles after 90 days of ownership.

To help consumers make the best choice when shopping for a new truck, J.D. Power derives Power Circle Ratings from the data, creating visual representations of each make and model’s performance in the APEAL Study.

This buyer’s guide highlights the top-rated 2017 Trucks from the 2017 U.S. APEAL Study. Each model listed in alphabetical order below receives a Power Circle Rating of 4 or 5 out of a possible 5 for overall appeal.

2017 Chevrolet Colorado

Chevrolet adds a new off-roading version of the Colorado midsize pickup truck for the 2017 model year. Called the ZR2, it is ready for off-roading right out of the box, powered by a new 3.6-liter V6 or a turbocharged diesel 4-cylinder engine. That V6 is available in other Colorado models, paired with a new 8-speed automatic transmission. Chevrolet also makes several technology upgrades this year.

2017 Chevrolet Silverado Light Duty

The Silverado 1500 is one of the most popular vehicles in America, and owners of this full-size pickup truck like it. For 2017, Chevrolet upgraded the Silverado’s maximum trailering capacity to 12,500 pounds, added capless fuel filling, and made safe teen driver technology standard. An automatic emergency braking system is now an option.

The 2017 Chevrolet Silverado Light Duty receives an APEAL Power Circle Rating of 4 out of 5.

2017 Ford F-150

The best-selling vehicle in America, the Ford F-150 full-size pickup offers something for just about every kind of truck buyer. Now, for 2017, that includes a new Baja-inspired Raptor model, an aggressively styled performance truck meant for high-speed off-roading. A new twin-turbocharged V6 and 10-speed automatic transmission also debut.

The 2017 Ford F-150 receives an APEAL Power Circle Rating of 5 out of 5, and is the award recipient in the Large Light Duty Pickup Truck category.

2017 Ford F-Series Super Duty

For the first time in two decades, Ford has completely redesigned the F-Series Super Duty. The steel frame is 24 times stiffer, the aluminum bodywork is lighter, the engines are more powerful and efficient, and the new Super Duty tows more weight and hauls more payload.

The 2017 Ford F-Series Super Duty receives an APEAL Power Circle Rating of 5 out of 5, and is the award recipient in the Large Heavy Duty Pickup Truck category.

2017 GMC Canyon

A midsize pickup truck, the GMC Canyon features squared-off styling for a rugged appearance. Available in trim levels ranging from basic to luxurious, the 2017 Canyon adds Terrain X and Nightfall Edition models this year, along with a new V6 engine and 8-speed automatic transmission. Safe teen driving technology is also new, and standard.

The 2017 GMC Canyon receives an APEAL Power Circle Rating of 4 out of 5.

2017 GMC Sierra Heavy Duty

Looking like a big rig and available with a new, optional 6.6-liter Duramax diesel engine cranking out 910 pound-feet of torque, the GMC Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD models are the only other heavy-duty pickup trucks to qualify for this guide. Additional upgrades include capless fuel filling and safe teen driving technology.

2017 GMC Sierra Light Duty

It’s not as popular as the heavy-hitters in the large light duty pickup segment, but the boxy GMC Sierra 1500 makes its owners happy. This year, they can tow more weight thanks to a maximum 12,500 trailer rating, and standard safe teen driving technology helps parents to coach their kids. Automatic emergency braking is also new for 2017, along with capless fuel filling.

2017 Honda Ridgeline

Honda re-introduces the Ridgeline to its lineup for 2017, basing the midsize pickup on the Pilot SUV. The result is more refinement, improved efficiency, greater comfort, and added technological sophistication. At the same time, features that have always made the Ridgeline a favorite return, including the locking in-bed trunk.

The 2017 Honda Ridgeline receives an APEAL Power Circle Rating of 5 out of 5, and is the award recipient in the Midsize Pickup Truck category.
