In this 2017 Family Cars buyer’s guide, we highlight the top-rated, family-oriented midsize and large sedans, as well as the top-rated minivans, in the 2017 IQS.

2017 Kia Cadenza photo Serving as a benchmark measurement of owner satisfaction with new-vehicle quality, the J.D. Power Initial Quality StudySM (IQS) is conducted annually. The study measures owner-reported design and defect problems with new vehicles during the first 90 days of ownership.
The information collected by J.D. Power forms the basis for the company’s Power Circle Ratings, which summarize the study’s findings in a simple, visual, easily referenced way. During the new-vehicle research process, consumers can use these ratings to make the right decision about a new car, truck, SUV, or van.
In this 2017 Family Cars buyer’s guide, we highlight the top-rated models in the 2017 IQS. This guide includes those car and minivan models earning a Power Circle Rating of 4 or 5 out of a possible 5 for initial quality during the first 90 days of ownership.

Dodge did not get a version of the Pacifica to sell. Instead, the brand continues to offer the old Grand Caravan. For the 2017 model year, the lineup is stripped down to four value-laden trim levels: SE, SE Plus, SXT, and GT. The standard radio screen grows to 6.5 ins. across in order to make the newly standard reversing camera genuinely useful.

Redesigned for the 2016 model year, the 2017 Optima lineup gains new hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants. The Optima Hybrid is estimated to get 42 mpg in combined driving, while the Optima Plug-in Hybrid is expected to provide about 27 miles of electric range and 600 miles of total driving range once the gasoline engine kicks in. New option packages and standard LED headlights for SX and SXL trim levels round out the changes.

2017 Nissan Maxima

The Maxima continues in S, SV, SL, SR, SR Midnight Edition, and Platinum trim levels, all powered by a robust, 300-horsepower V-6 engine.

2017 Toyota Avalon
Toyota’s full-size family car gains several driver-assistance and collision-avoidance technologies as standard equipment for 2017, all grouped under the Toyota Safety Sense banner. Otherwise the upscale sedan continues with a choice between a V-6 engine and a remarkably efficient gas-electric hybrid drivetrain, and in several levels of specification.

2017 Toyota Camry
In its final year of production before a complete redesign, the Toyota Camry repeats its performance in this year’s IQS, topping its segment for quality. With a new 2018 Camry right around the corner, Toyota makes few changes to the 2017 Camry aside from minor equipment changes and a new Blue Streak paint color.
