Yankees to call up top prospects Jasson Dominguez, Austin Wells: report
The Yankees’ youth movement remains in full swing, with top prospects Jasson Dominguez and Austin Wells set to be called up next.
Dominguez, a 20-year-old outfielder, and Wells, a 24-year-old catcher, are expected to join the team Friday for the team’s road series against the Houston Astros, according to the YES Network.
Both will be making their MLB debuts.
Nicknamed “The Martian” for his out-of-this-world physical attributes, the Dominican-born Dominguez signed a franchise-record $5.1 million signing bonus to join the Yankees in 2019.
Dominguez only recently advanced to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre but has been red-hot ever since, batting .419 with 10 RBI in his first nine games. He hit .254 with 15 homers and 66 RBI in 109 games with Double-A Somerset.
The switch-hitting Dominguez generated excitement with a strong spring training, where he batted .455 with four home runs in 22 at-bats.
Wells, whom the Yankees selected in the first round of the 2020 MLB Draft, batted .254 with five home runs and 20 RBI in 33 games with the team’s Triple-A affiliate. He tallied 17 home runs and 72 RBI in 96 games across three minor-league levels this season.
Their additions are expected to come when the MLB rosters expand from 26 to 28 players.
The Yankees are in last place in the American League East. They entered Wednesday 11 games out of the final AL Wild Card spot and are looking toward the future. Earlier this month, the Yankees added 22-year-old outfielder Everson Pereira and 23-year-old infielder Oswald Peraza to their MLB roster.
Pereira made his MLB debut on Aug. 22 and entered Wednesday with three hits in 31 at-bats. Peraza, who debuted with the Yankees last season, entered Wednesday with a .210 average across 44 games in his MLB career.
The Yankees have used 22-year-old rookie Anthony Volpe as their starting shortstop all season. Volpe, a 2019 first-round pick who is close friends with Wells, entered Wednesday with a .216 average but is the first Yankees rookie with at least 19 home runs and 20 stolen bases in a season.
