Top and ones from Denver Nuggets vs. LA Clippers, 09/09/2020
What you may not have noticed is that the Raptors' unique defense is consistently exploiting a blind spot of NBA officiating: the defensive three-second violation. As NBC Sports' Tom Haberstroh laid out in his latest column, defensive three seconds is one of the most overlooked calls in the NBA -- especially at the end of games. According to The Pudding's examination of the league's Last Two Minute reports, there were 141 defensive three-second violations in the last two minutes of close games between 2015 and 2018, and only one was called.
As Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes enters his third season as a starter, he already has an MVP award, a Super Bowl title and a reputation as one of the best in the game under his belt. When Mahomes became the starter in 2018, he shattered expectations out of the gate and propelled himself into stardom. While the natural talent was always there, NBC Sports' Peter King recently explained that Mahomes and many others attribute part of his success to Smith's mentorship.
While the Pac-12 will soon be able to rapidly test athletes, hopes that a fall football season might be salvaged remain premature. Navigating the coronavirus has been uneven among the league's athletic programs, often because of a patchwork of local regulations. There is also disagreement about whether test results among student-athletes should be made public.
Why would the Texans take on the albatross contract of David Johnson, a player seemingly on a downward spiral at this point in his career? The Texans quickly flipped their own second-round selection, 57th overall, to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for the often-traded Brandin Cooks. Cooks, the recipient of four 1,000-yard seasons from 2015-2018, was lauded as a similarly priced downgrade to Hopkins.
Talib reveals why he turned down Belichick's offer to rejoin Patriots originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston Aqib Talib has officially retired from the NFL, even though the New England Patriots were interested in bringing him back to Foxboro for the 2020 NFL season. Talib was acquired by the Patriots in a trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the 2012 season, and he played in New England through the 2013 campaign before signing with the Denver Broncos in free agency. The veteran cornerback played with the Los Angeles Rams over the last two seasons, and on Wednesday he announced his retirement.
Sometime after Paul Azinger stopped winning and before he went on television to talk about those who were, he described pressure in the simplest terms. The FedEx Cup was a little of both for Dustin Johnson. The PGA Tour will have bigger problems than it realizes if players aren't moved by winning $15 million in a day.
Call it one last pass in San Diego for Philip Rivers. The longtime Chargers quarterback, who joined the Indianapolis Colts this offseason after 16 years with the Bolts, has sold his home in gated Santaluz for $3.675 million. Originally listed in April for $4.199 million, the Spanish-style home's price was cut to $3.699 million in June before catching an offer six weeks later.
Dominic Thiem has his eyes firmly on the prize after sweeping aside Alex De Minaur to reach the US Open semi-finals. The second seed roared past young Australian De Minaur 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 to move another step closer to a maiden grand slam title. The defaulting of world No 1 Novak Djokovic, along with the absences of Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka, has ensured a new name will be on the trophy this year.
For two years LeBron James has been telling us how much he loves playing with Rajon Rondo because of the way the guard sees and thinks about the game. James spoke extensively about the difficulty of making adjustments quickly, during a game, rather than waiting until the next day to dissect what happened. “It's easy to be, like let's say a Monday morning quarterback,” James said.
Kawhi Leonard has the Los Angeles Clippers a win away from the franchise's first-ever trip to the Western Conference finals. ''We've got a lot of work to do still,'' Leonard said. Leonard finished an assist shy of his first playoff triple-double and the Los Angeles Clippers beat the Denver Nuggets 96-85 in Game 4 on Wednesday night to take a 3-1 lead in the series.
Scottie Pippen's 11-season run with the Chicago Bulls in the late '80s and '90s, during which time the team racked up six NBA championships, may be long behind him, but this summer, fans could relive his glory days by watching the ESPN documentary The Last Dance. In the backyard, Pippen shows off his pool (complete with a water slide), his grill, the outdoor television which ensures he never misses a basketball game, and even a putting green, where he practices chipping. Of course, cold Chicago winters mean indoor activities are a must, and Pippen's house features an amenity-laden basement complete with a wine cellar, movie theater (his favorite flick is Die Hard), a small gym area, a sauna, an air hockey table and vintage Mrs. Pac-Man game, and to top it all off, an indoor basketball court.
The Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. and basketball community gathered on Wednesday morning to remember legendary Georgetown basketball coach John Thompson Jr. at St. Augustine Church in Northwest D.C. with some of the biggest names in the sport flocking to the city to pay their respects. A number of Hoya all-stars were seen in the city Wednesday morning for Thompson's funeral, arriving at the church to honor the Hall-of-Fame coach who passed away at the end of August at the age of 78. Allen Iverson and Patrick Ewing, two former players under Thompson who were especially close to him, were the first spotted at the church.
Two-time grand slam winner Victoria Azarenka said the 'match is never over' when you take on Serena Williams after setting up a semi-final meeting with the 23-times major champion at the US Open. Azarenka demolished Belgium's 16th seed Elise Mertens for the loss of one game in the last remaining women's quarter-final contest to reach the last four of a slam for the first time since 2013. While Azarenka has an inferior head-to-head record with Williams - 18-4 - the Belarusian was one of the few players who consistently challenged the American when in her prime from 2012 to 2016.
Christian McCaffrey was a one-man wrecking crew and one-man league-winner in 2019, putting together a fantasy season for the ages. The question is, can he come close to repeating it, considering top-overall running back finishers rarely repeat in fantasy? Or will someone else topple him from the top?
Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was listed on the first Dolphins injury report of the year as fully participating in practice despite a hip injury. Presumably, it's the same hip injury that he suffered last season at Alabama. Limited in practice for the Dolphins on Wednesday were tight end Mike Gesicki (glute), cornerback Xavien Howard (knee), cornerback Byron Jones (achilles), receiver DeVante Parker (hamstring), linebacker Kyle Van Noy (hand), and receiver Preston Williams (knee).

Just about any prediction this year qualifies as a bold prediction, but specific to the Washington Football Team, so little is known that it's almost easy to get bold. Antonio Gibson leads the team in touches - This seemed much more bold before Adrian Peterson was cut, but I wrote it then too. Gibson won't lead the team in catches, and he won't lead the running backs in catches either (that will be J.D. McKissic), but Gibson will dominate in catches and carries.
The Cyclones, with junior quarterback Brock Purdy after he led the Big 12 with 306 yards passing per game last season, will open against an FBS opponent for the first time under fifth-year coach Matt Campbell. The Ragin' Cajuns won a school-record 11 games last season, and return senior quarterback Levi Lewis (3,050 yards passing, 26 touchdowns), along with two running backs who combined for 1,967 yards rushing and 27 TDs last season, part of single-season school records of 3,604 yards rushing and 42 TDs.
The Houston Rockets could be without a key member of their rotation as they finish out their battle with the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference semifinals, and the reported reason is unfortunate. Rockets forward Danuel House's status for the remainder of the series is in question as the league is investigating a potential violation of bubble protocol, according to ESPN. House has denied violating any protocols and reportedly did not leave the campus, though the NBA is now “probing House's activity within the team hotel.”
