Top high school standouts take center stage at 20X Rodeo Showcase

Jan. 29—RAPID CITY — The top high school rodeo athletes in South Dakota ascended upon Summit Arena for the Wrangler 20X High School Rodeo Showcase on Saturday.

The rodeo consisted of 10 events, with high school competitors coming from all four corners of the state.

Though individuals from the western portion of the state dominated several of the contests, a trio of area competitors claimed top-three finishes. Chamberlain's Dusty Rose was second in steer wrestling, Raylee Fagerhaug of Wessington Springs was third in barrel racing and Prestyn Haugen of Reliance was third in tie-down roping.

In bull riding, Casen Tibbetts of Box Elder and Jackson Spencer of Faith tied for first, each scoring a 64. Cass Waters of Pine Ridge was third with a 61.

Ryle Millar of Sturgis and Carson Sabers of Whitewood won the team roping title in 8.8 seconds. Caleb Miller of Summit and Tigh Gaikowski of Waubay finished in 10.1 seconds for second and Belle Fourche's Rance Bowden and Sern Weishaar finished third in 11.9 seconds.

Rapid City's Laramie Nutter paved the way in the pole bending competition, notching a 19.6 second ride for the win. Summer Schmaltz of Valley Springs was second with a 21.4 second ride, and Maiya Fredrickson of Baltic finished in 21.8 seconds for third.

In breakaway roping, Jaelyn Wednt of Newell ran away with the title in 4.2 seconds, while Tandee Nelson of Faith and Madelyn Saienga of Miller were second and third with times of 12.4 seconds and 16.4 seconds, respectively.

Buffalo's Braden Routier claimed the tie-down roping challenge in 12.3 seconds. Second-place finisher Cayne Merrill of Wall posted a time of 18.4 seconds, and Haugen placed third in 25.6 seconds.

Mataya Ward of Fruitdale prevailed in a tightly-contested goat tying competition, posting 7.7 seconds for the win. Castlewood's Kylie Wittnebel finished in 7.8 seconds to place second, and Bailey Verhulst of Reva was third in 7.9 seconds.

The steer wrestling title went to Bobby Brewer of Dupree, who pinned the steer in 4.9 seconds. Rose placed second in 5.4 seconds, and Quinn Moon of Creighton finished in 6.8 seconds for third.

Wall's Piper Cordes edged Aurora's Keylee Zancanella 13.7 seconds to 14 seconds for first place in barrel racing, while Fagerhaug placed third in 14.2 seconds.

Grady Hemming of Bradley won bareback riding with a 66, while in saddle bronc riding, Rope Roghair of Isabel scored a 69 for the win, and Taton Krolikowski of Martin was second with a 57.
